George at Valley Hybrids/Cruiser Brothers just added OD gearing to my HF2A on a 5spd 3lock 1HDT. Truck blows a lil black smoke on occasion now, and crawling down obstacles feels quicker. Lower rpms cruising. Last tank was 20.0 mpg w 33s.

Super impressed with their service, speed, quality, and support. Highly recommend.

@orangefj45 thanks for responding and sharing that information. That is what I needed to know but not what I wanted to hear. I was sorting guessing this might be the response, the tcase noise doesn’t sound reasonable. I will add rebuilding the transfer case to the todo list.

I appreciate the help.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ……
The issue could also be caused by improper preload on either dilute your assembly or the cluster gear assembly. Did you check the shims will you put this case together? We have the rebuild kits and all the shims in stock.
Happy to help.

I appreciate you sharing your experience regardless of the message. I reused the shims that were in the transfer case when I opened it up. I did have to replace the end cover because the original cracked after it was bolted down due to the shims slipping out of position. It is entirely possible they got damaged too and I should have replaced them. When I get ready to dig into I will give you a call for parts.

Thank you

Let me know what you find.

Typically the bearings in these tcases hold up extremely well.

What typically wears on these T-cases ?
Mine makes noise at around 65 MPH and I let off the gas (slack in the drive train) fine under load.
Both thirds have been pulled and inspected as will as both drive shafts have been replaced ;)
I am running the low and hi range gears with typical gear noise in low range, Gears were installed by respected Mud member/ Land cruiser mechanic Shoppy.

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge !

I broke gears within my case. Pretty super atypical, so the pros say. Driving interstate speeds with a truck meant to go slow. Gonna keep cruising speed to 2400rpms now, which is around 75mph w the H155F 5spd tranny and a new OD.

I detected a subtle new vibration thru the floorboard at a certain rpm for a couple months before it broke.

There are some writeups online about the driveshaft splines stripping as the failure when it rarely does fail.

like this one ..?

We have had a few of these transfer cases opened up for regearing. Surprisingly little sign of sidnificant wear on gear teeth or bearings, even on high mileage rigs. Exactly what I expect from Toyota. So to follow up on someone's post a while back, has anyone found any difference between the original 36221-60121 gear and the 36221-60121M gear? Anyone have price and availability on either or both of these?

Difference is OD and slight tooth profile. This comes into play in some case/gear combos.

We stock both the 60121 & 60121M gear options (as well as the 36221-60140 and a few others) new @ Cruiser Outfitters. We have many used including the 36221-60120 too. We use some of them very regularly on new/used cases we build here in the shop. New with HR/LR gears for example.

Shiny cruiser bits! 🤩

Cool. So are there bearings that go with that gear?

All of the 8x/10x HF2Ax idler bearings are the same. They are included in our TC9092, TC9297 & TC9807 complete t-case rebuild kits or sold individually as part# TCB35060 (90366-35060), TCB38016 (90364-38016) & TCB33002 (90366-33002)

Mine did this - rear output bearing was toast. Replaced that and noise is gone.

Sounded almost like straight cut gears when I let off the throttle anywhere over 35mph or so.
