My .02. How do these packages make it just fine from the manufacturer to dealerships (likely using the same carriers), but somehow from the dealer to our door they are danced on by the samsonite gorilla?

I don't get it (the need for re-packing), but I am happy I am the recipient of it, i guess.

Just a guess, but they're probably ship in pallets, several boxes in the same group, and inside a metal container and wood crates.. Much less likely to damage than 1 single box kicked down the truck and dribbled all the way to your door.

Dealers are receiving pallets of freight not single boxes. I’d assume this is the biggest reason. I don’t see them stocking only 2 axles, most likely a pallet of them, especially a bigger online dealer like Serra (I ordered a master from them last year, very well packaged). They’ll be my pick for FDS as well.

When we order bulk construction materials it might be fedex or UPS but it’s typically in big CDL box trucks with pallet jacks in the back so they can’t really drop and damage anything.

Generally speaking, dealers do not receive parts on a pallet unless the following conditions:

1. LDO: Large Dealer Order (think filters and things of this nature). No Toyota dealership is ordering axles as an LDO.

2. Large parts: Roofs, side panels, headliners, short blocks, long block assemblies (the last one would come in a crate).

3. Vehicle Frames.

Parts are delivered daily to dealerships in rolling cages with totes and boxed parts. These are emptied and then returned to their "facing" depots.

All orders that are being placed as "customer special order" (every order that comes through on a sale like this -- axle shafts for 20 year old Land Cruisers, or brake masters for that matter) would **not** be stocked at a regular Toyota dealership unless the inventory movement shows necessary sales in past 12 months for stocking purposes.

No Toyota dealership in the US would have a pallet of 43430-60040 axle shafts for the 100 series.

Good to know @OGBeno. I was thinking more of a bunch of different parts on the same pallet(my example was bad), I’m not a dealer so I was guessing. Thanks for the good info.

Does this mean that dealers essentially drop ship? Packages are not opened and or re-packed from the OEM?

That depends on each individual dealer and how well they know the parts they are pitching.

Also, Toyota has started a selective drop ship program from the depots to consumers though I am unsure how prevalent it is.

I ordered a new rear axle housing for my wife's 80 from Fred Anderson in Raleigh. I asked about having it drop shipped directly to me rather than to Raleigh, then back to KY. Toyota corporate prohibited that. Bummer as it took extra time to arrive, but when it did, the housing was packaged perfectly.

The program is in testing phase and only in certain parts of the country with carefully picked out dealership parts depots. It may or may not be instituted throughout the Toyota ecosystem.

You are in a region called Southeast Toyota (SET) which is a distributorship and will not participate in this program.

Interesting. And, a bit of a bummer.

But, in the end, it didn't make a lick of difference... just a little more time.

Looking back at 2023, Presidents Day may be the next Toyota 25% off sale.
I think you’re right. Looking back historically the next sale after the new years was 2/21 - 2/26 (ish).

Not sure if this is across all dealers.

Toyota is having a 15% off sale for the next 7 days. Too bad it not the 25% off sale that was anticipated.
