Hey guys.. I was just wondering how good is the "small" toyota oem oil filter? I am currently using Wix 51515 oil filter and wanted to use Toyota OEM filter but my local dealer said that they no longer carry the big oil filter, only the small one. Are the small oem filter any good? Or should I just stick with Wix filter?

The Toyota purists will tell you Toyota no matter what.

I was using the larger Toyota filter until they became discontinued. Yes, you can get them from Cruiser Dan but for me a $12 plus $10 shipping doesn't add up. I now run a Napa Gold (Wix filter), which is the same size as the large filter. Buy your filters when Napa has their filter sale (which happens to be this month) and they are $5 each.

I use them, they work well and they are inexpensive.

Difference

I believe Dan posted somewhere, but the big filter has a paper medium while the small filter has a synthetic medium. The small filter is said to be superior because of this. Surface area/size of the big filter is not an indication of effectiveness.

This is what Cdan told me.

I go small now since the large one I can't get off with standard oil filter band wrench or my expanding socket operated one.

I've also heard that the large one increases cavitation on start up, which makes sense. I also use the Napa brand.

MOIBIL 1 only! Or k&n

I just bought my first oil filter for an 80LC the other day and was surprised at how small it was.

I got the Purolator PureONE PL10241 because it was all Advanced had besides house brand.

Did I do good?

The pure one is purolators premium filter . It's not bad by any means and I would run it if I had 2. Basically anything other than FRAM and your good. I've never had any customer concerns about purolator filters

I think that's true about the small filter if you get the Japan made small filter from Dan. If you go to the dealership and ask for a filter they are going to give you a small filter but not the Japan made one and it has a paper medium I believe

Thanks for all the replies... I am still unsure if I am going to use Toyota Small filter or Stick with Wix filter. When I bought the Toyota small filter, it was made in Thailand not Japan :/ which kinda made me sad

CruiserDan carries the ones made in Japan, just got some.

Be advised you guys are talking about two entirely different Toyota "small filters". There is an excellent one that is gone long ago and a new one that is crap. Speak in part numbers.

Definitely the ones you want..
