In a 40 series with a 2F.

Who has done this?

Searched, came up empty.

I installed one in a 84-60 a few years back, but would like to read up or talk with someone running this set up in a 'stockish' 40 series.

Thanks!

-Steve

I run that setup in my 40, and I can think of 10 more here in SLC that we (or the customers) have done in the last couple years... Mine is SOA, etc, but I have a good customer running that combo in a SUA DD 40. What you got cookin?

hey steve, jeff zepp had a right up a while ago on his site. my link to it is not working but you should be able to get to his site in the tech links. good luck!

Mark-

A friend purchased a 79-40 and wants to make it more drivable both on and off road. We have been talking about a lot of different options and this was one. Also, wanted this info for the FAQ! :) as I am certain that I am not the only one that has wondered about this.

Thanks for your help guys!

Mark/Curt-

If I get something specific, your phones WILL ring. :)

OH!

Were either of you two able to find a 40 series top cover for the tranny, or how much modification to the tunnel cover was required? Modifications to the 4WD shift linkage?

Thanks!

-Steve

I recall its an H-55F 5 speed from Austalia with matching split case. Bought mine from SOR (or is it SOL?). People had told me it would fit right in but that is not true. You will need to make some cuts so the shifter can enter the cab and you will need to redo the driveshafts. Other than those two items its a piece of cake. You will like the difference you get at higher speeds. While the low gear is lower than stock if you want to crawl then go with one of the other transmissions.

One more item. You will loose your parking brake in the conversion.

I have a fj40 H55 top plate...........:)

I asked Marv to find me one, it came from a late model BJ42

Steve,

I TOTALLY understand about exploring different options. That was exactly the point of my Life in the Slow Lane article in TT. You can get close to the same destination by using an H41 and a rubber overdrive without sacrificing the parking brake or any sheetmetal issues.

The one I did was in a 69, so there was a bit more trimming involved. Tub cross brace alongside gas tank needed to be clearanced, but the tranny did not stick thru the trans cover any different than the previous four speed. Clearance issues are gonna be different on the 79, especially with the tank under the truck.

I haven't done it but I thought there were issues with the input shaft length. diesel vs gas I believe the diesel input is longer.

In the link posted previous, there is clarification on this matter.

Six cylinder, gas or diesel is supposed to have the same input shaft, the four cylinder diesel will have the different input shaft.

I would be purchasing a new unit that is available stateside here from many a vendor.

Why do you have to sacrifice the parking brake? I installed one on my H55F/Split case combo.

Kurt and I talked about this issue;

One solution is to run a late model ('79 and up?) FJ40 rear axle housing which has e-brake out at the wheels (w/ 60 drum innards)

Or, convert rear to disc and get calipers w/ e-brake (Monte or Eldorado)

Yup, the late model FJ40 housing is the way to go IMHO, toss some brakes on it, swap your shafts and 3rd and your good to go with FAR superior brakes than the TC mounted IMHO. Of course there is a 3rd option. I can get a TC mounted park brake kit for a split-case, but it is spendy... more than a disc brake or late model housing.

I installed an H55F in my 1969 FJ40. Issues were/are:

- Crossmember needs to be cut out. I replaced it with a 2" tube further back.

- I needed a 1" body lift to clear the back of the TC to the tub. It's still close.

- Still fighting the tranny hump. The hump sits right on the tranny and I'm having a hard time cutting the hole without really having to booger up the hump. The body lift helped, but only sightly.

- Parking brake is not an issue. There was a non-US issue 70 series that used the drum brake on the split case. There are several companies that sell the conversion parts. BTB sells the longer cable.

Parking brake kit.

Full float, disc brake axle, w/parking brake is an option too...

Thanks!

I still havent finished putting my H55/split into my 76 40 but... I have it sitting between the frame rails and roughly lined up with the body on waiting to drill the holes for the tranny mounts. It has the parking brake on the split case (I was lucky, when I ordered it it came with one). It's mated to a 350 though. So if you need pictures for reference holler. It seems that with the 350 you could use the stock hole in the tunnel but the tranny would sit a little low. I am hoping to raise the top of the tunnel to help it fit.

I am running a H-55 in my 40 with a split case (granted I am also running a sb350) My shifter comes out of the stock hole. and all fits nicely in the frame, There are two different top plates one for a 40 and the other one, anyone in a forty needs the "other" one. It has the shifter hole farther back.
