Anyone have any connectivity issues?

I have one, and had used it with success.
Recently got a new smart phone, and can no longer get it to connect. Old phone is toast.

I get an error stating something like "incorrect MAC address"

They only work with android device, and if I remember correctly the first time you connect it you have to have internet service.

He recently updated the app and it broke functionality on a bunch of devices. I had to extract the .apk installer from an old tablet I hadn't turned on in a year to get a working version again. Then I turned off updating for that app.

I only paid 50 or 60 bucks for the first one.
Like everything else they went up with each purchase.

I now use a koso temp gauge to monitor real time engine temperatures.
Hey Broski thanks for the insight. Can you elaborate (ie, model, wiring, etc) on the Koso you are using? Temp is something that would be a minimum for me to look at real-time.

Our OBD1 forces us to cut the upper radiator hose and connect the temp sensor in between the cut hoses to get a temp reading. I used Trail Tech sensor because no wirings invoked but downside is it runs on CR232 battery that you can't get into. It last up to 4-5 yrs. Just buy another and plug it when its dead.

The Koso is available on ebay and 12 volt powered, I have it wired to power up when the the key is on.

I drilled and taped into the outlet pipe coming off the head for true temperature reading, One could try to get that pipe already drilled and taped from Wets' End 🤷‍♂️
Or do what @efjayatee did and cut the hose but that introduces two more places for a possible coolant leak.
The round flat spot on the out let pipe looks like it was made to put a sender there ;)I have been really happy with this set up !! and it looks like it belongs there.

I got one from the maker from his last batch he made in June/July for my ‘94 Fzj80.

Over the years I was able to obtain three of these, and I am not a friend of the maker.
What one needs to know is these are good for diagnostic only.
Or you need to extend the wires so you can get it in the cab.
I wanted to use mine for real time engine temp.
The first one I had melted inside the engine compartment, so the second one I moved as far away from the engine that the cord would allow and put it in a little insulated box. It lasted longer, but still burned up.
That’s why I sold the third one.
I don’t think it’s the builders fault it’s just not designed to be used in Extreme heat.
If you want one of these, you should know that going in.
In short, these are not designed for real time use only for diagnostic purposes.

I second what @Broski said, it's a super useful tool for diagnostics but isn't built for full time engine compartment temperatures.

After running mine for a week the sticker started peeling off due to heat so I pulled it out before it was damaged.
I read the posts about it not being made to use full time while driving so was curious if there was a solution to that. I had read somewhere that you could extend the cable so the unit could be inside. An $8 OBD2 extension cable and a $4 OBD1 to OBD2 adapter cable fixed that.

All the wire connections were soldered and vinyl shrink wrapped. Plugged the cable to the diagnostic port and ran the extended cable through the fire wall grommet of the main wire harness. Looks pretty clean.

I just wound up the excess wire and put in the glove box.

It could be ran to other areas inside, but I don’t think it gets too hot in there and I have good signal to the app on my mobile device. Not really sure what all the other readings are, as I mostly just wanted it to monitor engine temps and get check engine codes.

So we will see if this fixes the issue of it not being able to run full time while driving. I’m hoping it works out, but will report back if there are any meltdown issues with it inside the glovebox.

This is the only reason I’ve been holding off on getting this unit. Fear that the engine heat will melt it. Please post updates how this works out for you. Looks like a great job.

Very Pro.

I've been running mine now with the same extension mod for several months...no issues so far. The only real reading that I care about is the ECT, so that is in giant numbers, even when I run split screen on my 7" tablet with OnX, Waze, Etc. Nice that it does have the overheat alarm that you can set too.

Thank you for the info. Are these units still being made?

Just had a batch out recently (spring/summer) when I got mine, but may be sold out now...not sure how long (or if ever) another batch gets made.

Back to this again.

The issue got fixed. Now I can no longer connect. Same phone as previously.

@Aloha Jen Curious about this for the ability to read codes via this device as opposed to the paperclip method. I guess I have missed the boat for years it never clicked for me that this could pull the codes and display. I had always thought you still need to read the codes via the dash and jumper. I had always thought of this as a source to read some of the engine vitals and nothing more. Today I learned! 🤯 Guess I need to add this to my list of want to have.
