I upgraded to the Toyo Open Country A/T III, 285-70-17 and in the past 2 months I have got 4 flats. All from the sidewall, today was 2. I air down between 15-19 psi for the trails. Today I purposefully took it easy and had 2 flats. Are these tires junk? Is a KO2 a better stronger choice?

Did you get them in E load? I was just about to pull the trigger on a set of these in 285 75 17, but...

Good question. I just checked and it looks like the 2 I wrecked today are C load, however the others are E load. Looks like Discount has 'sum 'splainin' to do

Do you have P285 or LT285?

Do you have P285 or LT285?
Yep, one of the reasons that I bumped my p-metric tires to LT, on my DD, was I was tired of the “flats” on urban surface streets. “F” a harsher ride, vs changing a tire in a suit…

I went with Load E and LT tires and have had no issues. Just got back from wheeling good in Moab problem free.

So Discount Tires put a mismatched set of tires on your LC? That's not good!

On a personal opinion side note, the Toyo definitely doesn't have as aggressive of sidewall as the K02. Of course, C rated vs E rated probably played a larger role in the punctures.

Not to go off topic, I got a sidewall slit this past weekend on my 285/70/17 KO2s (C load) running 18psi driving on dirt/cobblestone/rocks for about 35 miles total. I didn't lose any air, one of the people on the trail is a tire repair guy, he said my slit was just cosmetic and to run them till they are bald. I wonder if I should clean it and use rubber cement just to seal it.

I have been using 285/75/16 AT3's for roughly 25k miles so far, coming from a set of AT2's. The AT3 is a great tire, haven't had any issues yet, they are Load rated E, 126/123R. I actually had a screw puncture the tire but I pulled it right out, didn't get deep enough to puncture. Sorry to hear of your flat issues.

I have d rated bfg ats on my 2000 and p metric toyo open country at3s on my 2006. I like the toyos much better but you gotta realize that the bfgs weigh 52 compared to the toyo at 42. Thats a huge difference in centrifugal mass and for some folks the stronger tire may be better.

I’ve had P-rated AT3s on mine for about 2 years — besides running over a bolt, they’ve been great. Sorry you’ve had issues.

I have had Toyo MT and ATII, both in E-load with 3 ply sidewalls. Never had a sidewall blowout. I "think" the ATIII have the same carcas as the MT's... if you choose the 3-ply version. There are 4 versions of the ATIII in that 285/70R17 size. Choose wisely.

I went with the Falken AT3Ws and have had no issues with them on the sidewall strength. I think their P rated sidewalls are a little more durable than others. It’s one of the reasons they’re a heavier P rated tire.

That's crazy. I've been running KO2's in an E load for 4 years now and i've never destroyed a tire on any trail *knock on wood*. I've scuffed them up pretty bad but they've always held.

Update: Discount Tire let me buy road hazard warranties for all 5 tires even though I only bought 1 replacement from them before this happened. When I came back with these 2 flats they warrantied them and let me pay the difference to upgrade the replacements to Load E's. Really great of them. The shop I originally bought these from, who I don't actually think knew there was a mismatch of E's and C's is going to replace the last C one at no charge, good on them.

Do you air down? And if yes to what psi?
