Can anyone tell me how much raw wood should be exposed between the ice and water shield underneath my shingles and the gutter?. The roofers tell me this is normal. I believe ice and water shield should cover all the exposed wood that might get splashed or have ice contact.

Zero. The point of the shield is to provide an additional layer of protection to the decking in the event that water is able to back up on the roof. It should start at the edge of the roof. Having any wood showing completely defeats the purpose of installing it. Generally in our warmer climates usually just a couple runs is fine. In colder climates where snow build-up is common, they often do the whole roof.

Back to driving rants.....

TWICE this weekend I encountered morons on the road.....1 blocking an entire travel lane of a multilane highway, stopped, because they failed tp plan to get in the correct lane, a half mile back....so I roll up behind them and get on the horn,....hoping to wake them up and make them realize that there is a world going on around them.....and they immediately yell back at me and curse and flick me off.....like I am the problem. Now, not only will they not realize the error of their ways and maybe do better in the future, they'll tell their family that some crazed person blew the horn at them for 'no reason'......its so sad.

Then Saturday I'm driving down a 2 lane country road and 4 kids on dirt bikes (no lights, no helmets, riding in both lanes) shoot out and I come up behind them while going the speed limit.....the slowest one starts to slow way down pretty quick (no brake light) and I have to get on my brakes pretty hard......so I blow the horn. He looks back super startled and swerves to get off the road.....as I'm passing by at 15 mph he flicks me off and throws his hands up. Like I am the problem. Then the other 3 slow down and turn back around and start yelling and cursing at me....they are prob. 15 years old.

Where has the ability to be humble/apologetic/normal gone?

The metal they recommend to cover it will cause all sort issues with the gutters. Thats why no one around here uses it.

Drip edge causes issues with gutters? That's the first I've ever heard of that nonsense, lol.

More driving fun.

Peeps that do not use cruise control and then speed up when u are passing with cc set only to do this nonsense for many miles and they are clueless to what is happening.

Driving well under the posted speed. Two lane 55 zone with little to no curves. They make it to 48. Then give the stink eye and middle finger for passing them. Unbelievable.

Leaving a stop light and they are getting out accelerated by a fully loaded 18 wheeler. This is all age groups. So strange.

Oh, and if the Purge ever happens, I'm going after the ever-increasing # of people that drive around during the day with their high beams on.

If you do that, every other thought and action you take is highly suspect and most likely detrimental to society as a whole.

Today on the way home on 40E and its pretty crowded and moving slow-ish....nothing really new.

I get behind this car going slow and constantly tapping the brake pedal unnecessarially...I think to myself 'phone'
I go around and get beside this dumb looking woman with her phone in her hand being held up at eye level...not on a mount, in her hand....on a video call with 2 others, split screen.....eyes on the road very little
'This cannot stand', I think to myself. She's putting hundreds in danger, not to mention just straight up getting in eveyone's way.
We are going slow enough (kinda) that I can get beside her and get her attention and mouth 'get off your phone moron' and she smiles back stupidly and shakes her head no like a 5 year old would....then says 'my car, i can do what I want'
I got out of her way.

We are doomed.

I lived in the Philadelphia are until I was 35. Traffic was non stop insane. One of a litany of reasons I moved to the FL Keys when I was 35, started over. I'd still be there if I was a millionaire. Now I live out in the country, go to places where I have to deal with traffic when I have to. You guys live in Raleigh, I do not see it improving.

I have found that people (at least the ones applying for a job) under 35 do not understand the definition of experience. Nor do they understand what no drama means. When I was building houses 30 plus years ago I'd put an add in the paper (it was printed information that a kid would toss on your porch every morning) and I'd get 30-50 guys with carpentry experience apply. Now I want an experienced mechanic and I get factory workers that worked on their buddy's Ford Falcon, in the driveway, on the gravel. But they are trying to get their life back together and tell you stories about how life keeps beating them up and every employer they ever had was a jerk. All they need is a chance..............

Just looked out the window and the frost has melted off the roof, time to go put up more metal!. I have this side hustle going, I'm building an addition on this guy's shop. Can't wait to go back to work on trucks, I need the rest.

Wow - extreme case - amazed at your lesson for this person!

Its a dangerous period between self-driving and "no-help" driving - our great grand kids will talk about us and how we survived this period, if we do. If we do not, we are just another casualty. To think, those of us ~50+ as kids driving at 14+, seat belts where optional . . .

Followed a guy one time who was going really slow and I could see he was looking down at something, coming up on him.

I was ready to let him HAVE IT - mild case of rage. I get up beside him and is is F'ing ready a book.

I didn't know what to do - I literally was like - "wait, reading is better than a phone? No its worse, WTF I'm confused." I just kept driving.

When I’m driving the cruiser I’ve noticed how many horribly inexperienced drivers are around me now. I took advice from granddad and just kinda go where you need to go and act surprised, slight swerve will clear anything out, notice how they move and act offended. Millennials refer to us as “F around and find out people”. They fear us they just won’t admit it. I’d be scared also
