So...

  • I have an engine oil leak-seems like it could be the oil pan gasket.
  • I have a coolant leak-can't figure out from where. Engine plugs? Doesn't seem to me mixed with the engine oil, so probably external leak.
  • I have a broken off piece at the bell housing where one of the transmission bolts connects to the engine.
I'm doing an oil change right now because it's low on oil, and because I just drove 3,000+ miles across the country.
The coolant is a little low as well.

Suggestions welcome.
Coolant looks like it's coming from behind the injector pump - is your bottom radiator hose well fitted?
Do you have the steel heater hose running across the top of there too?
Could be a core plug but unusual unless it's been frozen solid.
Bell housing has enough design margin to cope with one less bolt, consider it a vent.

Stopped in middle of oil change. Can't access the damn filter enough to get it off. A 24mm seems to fit the nut on the front, but can't get in there with a ratchet, a wrench, anything!!!
I guess maybe a longer extension and a u joint adapter.
I may just leave that filter on for now as is.

Anyone know of a filter replacement/relocation kit for this? I'd rather switch to a modern filter, or at least be able to even relocate the existing one.
What a PITA!!!!!!!!!
I find there's space directly under the air cleaner to swing a lump hammer against a ring spanner to break the seal.
Otherwise a long extension out the front - easier with the bib folded down.

I’ll check on the lower hose. Also the heater hose.
Thanks.
The “vent” comment made me laugh,

By “bib” you mean the whole front face?
I noticed there’s a hinge at the bottom.
This is my first LC 40 series. So the bib folds down?! I’m gonna have to see how that works!!!!
Thanks!!!!

Yes. A key feature of the 40. The radiator doesn't move though unless you remove the hoses obv

Sorry no idea.
It was designed to be easy to fix. I think that if the seals are good, and you don't overtorque, then it should come off fairly easily next time.

I would just pull the oil filter housing( 3 bolts) careful not to mess uo the gasket, and at least change the filter and torque it properly for the next time.
I may have to do that. I used one of those adaptors to connect the socket to a drill/driver as part of an extension. Snapped it in half and the filter housing did not budge.

Folding down the bib may make it easier to access, but no way am I taking off the bull bar, unbolting the fenders, disconnecting the lights… for an oil change.
For now I’m just leaving it and dumping/replacing oil.
I would like the next time I try to be when I put in a relocation adaptor so I never have to deal with that thing again.
This vehicle has some great simple designs, but this one is simply nuts-especially in an almost inaccessible spot. So far the only thing that has genuinely pissed me off.

I felt the joint of the radiator hose and no moisture.
However, there’s a good deal of coolant pooled under the water pump-so I’m thinking the water pump gasket has a leak. It’s a brand new pump.

Used my GoPro to check behind the fan and under the water pump. Seems to me it's the water pump gasket/seal.
What do y'all think?
I checked the water several times on the trip and it was always topped off. However, the morning after the hotel in Roswell, NM, after that grueling drive through Texas, I had to add water-about a quart or more.

Here are some pics from under there:

Certainly looks like a strong candidate.
I'd double check the heater hose clamps before pulling it though - and especially that metal pipe which can rust with pinholes.

Do you have identical setup to me?
24mm is way bigger than mine (17mm I think).
You do have more clutter there with the vacuum pump tbf. Happy that my electric vacuum pump is well out of the way :)

I'm going to put in some coolant, some oil, and drive it to go get stuff I need from Lowes/HD (funny enough up here we have a Lowes and a Home Depot right across the street from each other). It's about 20 miles round trip so I don't think it's a big deal.

I really need a garage. Working outside is not ideal even in summer, but once it gets cold here (below freezing sometimes) it's impossible.
Thinking of building one of those metal structure garages, and maybe doing the floor with like a four foot deep trench to stand in and work under the vehicle.

Not sure what pipe you mean, but I will look.
Here's a few pictures of my oil filter.

Is it me, or does it look like some A$$*ole welded a nut on the end of it?
Yea something definitely fishy with that. Possible that the whole centre bolt was remade even? Pull the whole thing off as suggested, but be prepared for all eventualities. Might take a bit of effort to get it back together.

Hopefully they just tacked a nut on the end because it got rounded off due to overly frequent oil changes.
Doesn't look welded to the case at least
