Just checking in ... I've read numerous threads over the past few years, figured I'd just join as a member.

I bought my 74 FJ40 about 10yrs ago, briefly drove it here and there, but it needed work! Typical "life things" happened that delayed me from working on it and a couple years ago my wife said - when are you going to get the Land Cruiser back on the road?! Green light for me and away we go on resto mode. A cross from Ben on Project Wrong Way and Jason from the 40 Channel ... not doing a complete frame-off resto, but close. And, I'm taking it back to close to factory original, or at least factory looking. Discovering many issues I didn't see when I bought it - wrong parts, missing parts, wrongly installed parts and so on. It's still a work in progress but making good headway, I'm at the wiring harness area of my restoration.

A few pics of some parts of my progress, I'm a bit farther along than shown here, but not by much

That block color turned out nice. Question for you did you replace the gaskets and seals or just give it the fresh coat of paint?

All new gaskets and seals! Since I had it out and easily accessible, might as well make sure. The same for the Transmission and Transfer Case.

The block color is Copper. I gave it a coat of engine primer and thought the copper would go well with the green. I have a new set of wires and such, this was more of a "mock-up" pic before I put it back in. It's actually a 78 2F motor.

You've got an FJ60 thermostat housing, and an FJ60 nut on your harmonic balancer. No PS holes on the block though. Might want to check your casting numbers.

I know the Thermo Housing isn't correct, but works enough for me. I did look for a true replacement and they're a bit pricy just for that when this one works.

The stamp looks like 2F-317640 and the block casting number is 81005, which I take as 1978 - Oct - 5th, so it tracks pretty well for me that it's a 78 2F motor.

I've had an FJ60 thermostat housing sitting in my shop for a while now, to go on my 40. I prefer the four-bolt seal of the 60 housing, and consider it an upgrade to the stock 40 housing. My 40 is not a resto; I have installed various later Toyota upgrades when appropriate - FJ60 distributor, FJ80 brake master cylinder, Koito halogen headlights, etc.

Welcome to Mud in any event, and all best wishes for your project.

RE: your colorful block, you should look up @Trollhole 's "Big Gay" 2F build. :)
