...in a minimum built 40
I went from a pretty well built 60 to a SUA 40 and the differences are immense. Here in the northeast the 40 is SO much easier to weave through tight trails but the 60 on 38s made for a solid rock crawler.

Leading a group of mixed wheelbase and tire size and locked rigs you start to learn where different trucks are challenged. The spots where SWB SOA bust pinions, where LWB rigs cut driveshafts in half. A few inexperienced drivers making mistakes and a few yahoos saying “hold my beer”. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’m a bit nervous about my son in his first time in a minimum built 40 (he’s driven the 80 previously).
Ohh the number of times I have heard motors rev, followed by a bang, the throttle is not your Freind…

Did a proper shake-down run today, no major issues.

Next is figuring out how to pack the rig, it’ll be a challenge…

We can pull another front differential to be rebuilt in the Springs on that table. Mark and Maria will be thrilled. We’ll have to band together and make them a new one 😂
Lol….I would rather not do that again, (still remember Russ sending John over to help and him looking at me covered in oil and saying Ray you know what you are doing..I’m leaving).

When that 80 got back to Colorado and they pulled it to check, it was in spec, so not bad for a that feels right picnic bench build..

Last year it was replacing a long side front axle shaft in the dirt.. double winching an Fj40 with a snapped pinion down a slab, then getting it drug back to loon..

So, No broken stuff this year!!!!! Front locker only when needed and easy on the damage pedal…smooth is the word of the week…

I don’t want to camp smelling like gear oil again, there is never enough brakecleen and hand cleaner to get that stuff off…

10mpg on the street, 9 towing!
big blocks, loaded, empty doesn’t matter, on mileage, they will run 3k rpm loaded hard for days on end, best tow pig I have had was a 454-nv4500 combo, quiet smooth, reliable and pulled great,

Ray, copy that on the 90wt smell, just soaks into everything. Irish spring & sugar will get the job done.

Need some routing advice. I will be driving from Angel Fire, NM, going up through Grand Junction and Salt Lake City (I have to see someone in GJ).
I have never been to Rubithon. I have read the entire thread, but am still confused about the best route to get into Loon Lake.

I will be coming from the east, but I can go around Lake Tahoe in either direction. Can someone please tell me the best route to get from either Truckee or South Lake Tahoe to Loom Lake camping spot? I plan to arrive at the campsite late Monday afternoon or early evening. Basic directions would be invaluable.

Thank you in advance.

Is this route open?

Just beware that there may be some serious delays on Ice House Road from construction going on
Right. I'll be avoiding that and going in to Loon the more pleasant way, Wentworth springs rd. Via Placerville and then Georgetown, though it adds 20 miles to my drive. Last gas is Georgetown (usually cheaper than Placerville). Uncle Tom's cabin is worth a stop for pics if nothing else. Also a cellphone spot a mile or two past Uncle Tom's, last one before Walker hill.
