I've waited to calm down a bit before I post this but I wanted to *share* with my fellow Cruiserheads potentially the worst experience I've ever had from an auto shop.

Usually I try to do most of my own work taking into consideration doing the jobs which are more labor intensive. I farm out the oil changes, tire rotations, simple stuff, well I guess tire rotations are not so simple, anymore.

Anyway took Connie in for her first major tune up (sans valve lash check), oil change on schedule, and *tire* rotation.

Dropped the truck off ( I usually wait and *help* the mechanic) but today I was going to the dentist to have a cavity filled.

Came back picked up the truck (mouth full of novicane or whatever the heck they use) paid the bill, and drove off without for the first time in my life without doing a walk around the truck. Nothing personal but I don't like going to the dentist (must be the mouth full of novicaine or whatever they use) so I was in a grumpy mood.

Started drving away and the steering just wasn't quite on par. Not really sure how to explain it but it would jeck slightly then release.

Ok, I'm now about 100 yards away and I merge onto a major roadway thru town doing about 25 miles per hour. The steering hasn't improved and now I'm sorta spooked.

I'm now hearing a slight grinding sound coming form the left front tire. Oh, this is not good. I'm now 1/2 mile away from the shop I decide to slow down carefully however the brakes are now funny and not fully responsive.

I come to a very controlled *stop* right in the middle of traffic and pop on my hazards.

Hop out and look down at the left front tire.

HOLY s*** !!!

The hub caps I have on the truck are put-on-first then mount the tire hub caps.

The tire rim is riding on the hub cap on the hub assembly completely free of the rotor studs and any lug nuts.

If I had gone any further the tire would have fallen off. If I had *pulled* over to stop which would have been to the right, the wheel would have come fully off too.

I must have had an Angel on my shoulder.

From my stopped vehicle I'm blocking traffic in the far right lane of downtown Silver Spring (six lanes, three each way) on Georgia Ave. Northbound.

Everything is going in slow motion and I'm partly in a daze.

There's a crosswalk 100 feet from me and the light has just turned and I'm watching about 30 pedstrians walk across the road and especially to my attention is this new Mother pushing a strolling baby carriage coo'ing to her newborn in the carriage walking/pushing across the walkway to the other side.

I'm just watching dumbfounded & numb as I turn back to my Cruiser stopped, hazards on, and the left front wheel, lug nut free, rim completely off the studs, resting supporting my truck on the hub housing.

Well I've had my share of "professional" mechanic screwups. My motto now is if I want it done right I'll do it myself.

I have a hard time sometimes feeling okay with the notion "everyone makes mistakes"... I mean, we all know that nobody is perfect... but forgetting to put lug nuts back onto a wheel is a pretty big goof.

My mother had a similar experience a few years ago- hers was a mazda- she took it into the stealership for an oil change/tire rotation and on the way back her wheel fell off. She was distressed by that, understandably.

Anyhow- stealership made good... they bought her two new tires (the one was thrashed after falling off) and a new wheel, as well as fixing the fender/cowling that got munched. They also paid for towing.

So I guess what I'm saying is that even if the shop did poorly by you (and they did) it was more than likely a problem with one person, not the entire shop. You should bring it to their attention and see what they do for you.

I would be seriously angry. A report to the BBB, a complaint in person and in writing to the district office... etc..

Not acceptable.

No, it's not acceptable, but it happens a lot. It's not the shop. I guarantee you they stress a full check before a vehicle leaves. It's the tech who did the work. A wheel -off situation is grounds for instant dismissal!

I've had the toyota dealer forget to change the oil filter before. I was getting the free oil changes that came with the truck that I bought new. I was very pissed to find out my frame filter was still on it when I got home. Took it back the next day and talked to the service manger and he told me he can give me a free oil change. I told him who cares about the oil change I get the free anyways and have not went back since. I will always do my own oil changes/tire rotation/ anything I can do myself from now on. On my wifes BMW I can't see spending $150 on an oil change. Let me see 5qt Castrol synthetic about $20 at walmart and an $8 filter from bmw. Oh yeah my wife didn't think $150 was that bad.

Does she throw the other $120 your way then? :D

My sister was driving from SoCal to NorCal in her Jeep Cherokee (I know I know... ) on highway 101 doing about 70. For those of you no from Cali... this once was a highway with areas that had no center divide. Well.. she was in one of those areas. So... she doing about 70 and then, she feels this thud and grinding noise. Her right rear tire passes her on the shoulder of the road. She steers to right and gets off the highway without incident. SCARY. What if that was her right front!!! A long term family friend did the work for us and this was the first issue ever.. For me.. it was the first and the last. I dont go to him anymore!

I hope you walked back to the shop and dragged them out to p/u your Cruiser from traffic...

Called them on my cell phone.

They couldn't believe it happened.

The mechanic who worked on my truck ( he does all my local work) bummed a ride from a part store delivery truck and came out with lug nuts and a floor jack.

He asked me to pull the truck out of the traffic to the right ... and I asked him to look a the problem again. That truck is not moving until that tire is back on !!!

Then lifted the truck without moving it, pushed the tire onto the studs, lugs nuts on ... and then asked for a ride back to the shop. Put the floor jack in the back of the truck and gave him a lift back to the shop.

Sigh.

did it much your hub at all? inside of rim? did they make good or ...???

wow - scary! glad it didn't come off and head towards the stroller...

best of luck!

They made good today and repalce the lug nuts with the correct ones. The hub cap was salvageable and put back on.

No damage to the hub. I wasn't going fast and as soon as the slight grinding noise started I instinctively went for the brakes.

What bothers me the most was how much potential liability I was expose to by somebody else working on my truck. The whoel idea in using a shop is to have convenience and safety.

Yes, *you* are the first in the chain of liability if something falls off your truck and injures a pedestrain.

Since this is so hard to find careful work these days I'm simply going to do *all* my own work.

Dropping a couple of grand on tools to do whatever I need to do to my truck seems inconsequential to the fact that I migh thave injured somebody with either the tire coming off my truck or loosing control of my truck and hitting a person.

When I came to a stop I was in a very crowed part of Silver Spring during lunch hour and since the weather was nice there were bunches of people strolling around.

Bring on the tools !!!

my friend has a volkswagen jetta and her brother owns a shop. well she took it in to him for something i cant remember what but when he was done and we were picking it up she took it out for a test drive and comes back and says. the front right is making a wierd noise from the wheel. so her brother takes it out. while hes gone i say " i bet he forgot to tighten up hte lugs" she was like no way. well after about a half hour he comes back in with the trim ripped off the fender and the a bigasss crease in it as well. yah the wheel came off and the car just sat on it, luckily.

As I said earlier I do all the work myself after screwups by "professional" mechanics. I had a well known national chain do brakes years ago and they installed a caliper that held the pads in such a way that the pads were NOT parallel to each other (it was painfully obvious). When the pads wore out in about 1/3 of the normal time I pulled the wheel off to see and then went to the shop. Their comment was that the caliper was out of warrantee!!! A letter to head office fixed that but now they don't do my work. I've also had the dealer leave the fill plug out of the front diff after an inner axle seal job. Another plug do do it yourself. Third time was another dealer that did not reconnect my glow plugs after a valve job. Three strikes and professional mechanics are OUT.

Yeah I go out and buy something for my cruiser after I change her oil.

its like someone said we are all humans and make mistakes but if in doupt go back and recheck the work done. when working on a car and someone pulls you off the job; its the worst thing that can happen to a technician or mechanic because that person comes back and forget where they left off. some times shops have those serious jobs as "wheel balancing" because it's serious for obvious reasons done by a $8.00/hr guy that those not care about keeping his job. it can happen and it will keep on happening. and it can happen to you doing your own jobs, cell phone call, wife calls you, etc. something really important is to test drive the vehicle when done; find something you the tech. forgot, it gets fixed before the customer gets the car. big car dealers, brake/suspension shops, etc. tell their techs and have them sign that if in case of a road test you get a ticket, accident, anything related to a test drive that you're on your own; that has techs. not wanting to test drive cars. my 2 cents.

"we all make mistakes" is fine for the tard flipping burgers down at the local cheesy greasy fry, but some people have jobs in which in even a slight boo boo can result in the death or injury of others. somebody's bad day could cause sombody else to have a worse day........
