Cool Audio dampener install - Second Skin Damplifier (lots of pics!)

So we meet again! I've been working on a lot of project on the new 84 60. Coming along great, if slowly.

I have the 60 torn down in my garage prepping the body for paint. While i was at it (can't drive it anyway - without doors, hood, fenders) i thought i'd finally get going on the damplifier install.

I started a few weeks back - working out some tips and tricks for getting the OEM tar mat out. Though i know folks have left it in, from what i gathered speaking with ANT (owner of SS) it will have better dampening (quieter) if stuck to bare metal.

Here's the "how do i..." thread for some tips/tricks on the tar mat removal:
http://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wa...ps-tricks.html

And my measurements were done w/ a cheap-o used Radio shack analog SPL meter. Going down a smooth'ish stretch of I90 at 60-65mph. 70-80db (A weight) and 90-100db (C weight) .

here is the start of the project - interior pulled out w/ factory tar in process of removal w/ dry ice/hammer/help from brother.

My bro was an ANIMAL when he got the hang of this. Set the 5lbs of dry ice on a section for 2'ish minutes, then move and hit with a hammer. It would come off in BIG pieces this way - most of the time just pickup w/ your fingers and move on. Sometimes need a screwdriver or chisel to get a tough spot or some leftover chips of tar mat.
We (ie my brother mainly) pulled it all in about 2 hours. If i were to do it again, i'd get TWO 5lb bags of the dry ice so you can swap it around faster between two people and let it sit 2-3min for best results (probably longer if it was warm to begin with). We had 45-50 deg weather all day, so dry ice didn't need 10min to work.
ice and hammer (harbor freight - harder plastic side worked great):

so - Before:

and - After:

fast forward through a bunch of other projects... Crazy amounts of work @ work, and pulling the body apart for sanding/prep for paint...

A few weeks go by and i finally decide i need to get this done. Pulled the crap out of the truck (set back in while sanding), and started cleaning/vacuuming. A buddy of mine came over to help last night after work. (family and good friends rock!).

He is fast! I spent the entire night cleaning ahead of him, or following and just nitpicking spots (pressing all edges down etc).

Starting out:

Both actually a bit into it and once we were getting the swing of it, but first time i remembered to grab some pics:

And just about done for the night (probably 3-4 hours hauling ass):

We have a full single layer over everything EXCEPT under the front seats. That will be next.

I'm doing 2 layers of Damplifier pro over the transmission hump (partially done), and rear wheel arches (done). Still need to do 3 of 4 doors, rear quarters, and rear gate.

in my quest to make this truck REALLY quiet (for a cruiser w/ offroad tires) - i am also looking at possibly shooting some liquid Spectrum deadener in spots i can't easily get at, and over trouble spots (arches, tranny hump, etc). Plus going to try using it as an undercoating in the wheel wells to sandwich deadener for best result.

Once that is done - i am going to lay Luxury Liner pro down where I can through the interior, under my new (hopefully soon to arrive) molded vinyl (replacing carpet).

So big plans and a LONG way to go!! But here's a start and i will try to update it as i go w/ pics. Let me know if you want any pics of something in particular or questions in general.

Almost forgot - tips for laying down the damplifier:

 • The 1" roller works very well, but a tennis ball works nearly as well and is MUCH MUCH faster!!
 • I used the end of the handle on the roller to push down corners and edges of sunken areas. That's another tool it would be nice to have 2 of so you can really tag team and not wait for someone to finish using it. A nice smooth, smaller screwdriver's end also works similar. The wood handle is nicer though IMO.
 • the razor blade knife is really helpful for straight cuts and cutting sheets smaller for tough areas.
 • cheap tin snips from harbor freight - more flexible for curves and odd shapes, also easier to use than the knife, but slower.

Thanks for all the help in the past - i hope this helps someone out in return!

Hey...pardon my ignorance.... how do you post that many pics at one time? Cut and paste? Where the thread doese not show the attachement paperclip icon... Just so know, so I can do that when I would like.

Let "us" know what kind of difference this made in the overall sound reduction. I'm about to $hit-can the front section of carpet in my truck and may get really motivated and remove the whole thing... removing the tar-crap looks like a boat load of fun.

good question - small pics suck.

To really lay it out for anyone interested (if you know this skip to next post)

I use picassa 3 on my computers, setup albums for projects, and upload to google web folders (1GB free space). I then manually insert pics as i go. I use around each photo's properties/url as i go at the size i want.

Hope that helps. did a quick screen shot and was lazy so just uploaded it.

yeah - that's what i hope to do when done - be able to say how much of a difference there is not just that i think it's a lot quieter.

I will definitely post up results!

I think i have too much. 160sq ft - planning on doubling up a fair amount and may sell any extra (or put it on the second 60 i have).

cost...um...probably too much. I really can't say enough about Second Skin - ANT was great to work with and he did work a bit of a deal. 160sq ft of DP, 80sq ft of LLP - Sound Deadening Materials for Noise Reduction from Second Skin

if you guys want to do a similar setup - definitely call and speak with him! It's great to have an owner of a company answer the phone at 6pm - providing install support himself!

Rob looks great. Like always you are doing a very thorough job. You have been very busy in the last week. I will be starting this same process in the next few months. I will be interested in how it works for you.

thanks Phil! you will have to come over and take a spin with me when it's done. then you can compare it with your sweet 60!

also you still have first dibbs if you want any damplifier i don't use.

hey - pics of your heater controls in the LEDs thread?

NICE!!!!

I loved the difference when I did my 60. Even with the V8 and exhaust it was better than stock.

Philos - thanks man. I read through your build when i was prepping for this. How many layers and of what did you use?

and most importantly - why don't you have a cruiser any longer?!?

Any new cruiser in your sights? It'd be great to see more of your build prowess for us lowly mechanics!

Hey Joe - link is above. Esh was nice enough to find it and even has it, but not installed yet. I just got confirmation that it has shipped, but 5-7 days IN australia... So i am expecting 2-3 weeks before it arrives. That's totally OK, because i have a ton to do still before then! I think they also post on ebay, but i ordered from their site directly - www.allcarcarpets.com.au (this should take you directly to the 60's molded vinyl and carpet options)

Next is to finish being retentive and hitting all edges, popping any air bubbles, and just tweaking the first layer in general. If i really motivate (i'm actually sick today - sucks because it is GORGEOUS outside=paragliding...), i might try and tackle the next door. Those suck.

My big hands are not meant to fit inside a small door access, while trying to press down hard enough (without slipping and opening an artery) for good adhesion. By the end of the last one, my hands looked like i fought with a small pack of wild cats and lost.

alright enough talking - time for some doing! i'll try to get some pics as i do the doors...

Nice wok Rob. I bought some RAAMAT for my 60, but in the mean time decided to use it in my 55 instead. I have put some under the bonnet and over the transmission tunnel on the 60 though. I also got hold of some other insulation that I got for free through work that I will use. I'll post a thread about that later.

haha!

I used the regular D'amplifier with just one layer. I did put some Ensolite over the rear quarters and over the transmission hump. as well as behind the door speakers. The Ensolite really helps with audio quality in terms of your stereo.

I've been contemplating another Landcruiser, but I'll catch flame as I've been looking at.....

I'm hoping to have one layer of the LLP comparable if not a bit better than the ensolite. If i have enough i was going to line the doors as well.

UZJ100?! damn man - the betrayal... lol. No worries - better to roll in a LC of any type than some Volvo... oh wait... . hehehe.

Glad to see you at least keep an eye on the 60's forum still. Get what you like and enjoy! though you know until you have another 60 we are going to point and laugh at you.

back to damplifier - worked on under the front seats. Passenger is nearly done. Going slow...

Thinking of how difficult to do headliner... man that looks like a bitch to pull down...

I hope it's going to be a big improvement. I'm getting pretty sick and tired of rolling my 87 while the new 84 is torn apart... I still have a long way to go. bodywork is the suck.

Yeah - ANT is pretty cool. Again if you are going to order something up just call him and talk with him for a few min. Super cool guy, and knows his stuff.

I thought about rhino lining (or deadliner, or hurculiner...) but figured it would be easier to pull up some adhesive mat than to try and break through line-x to mess w/ something...

Quit being a and just do it!

I have to say, even more than the improved quietness, the doors/hood/tailgate now close with a thud rather than a high pitched twang. Makes the vehicle feel more substantial.

Hey Joe - to consolidate a bit and in case you didn't read through the thread linked. Here's a stolen Pic from Esh's post - which shows the new molded vs some FJ40 vinyl iirc:

(Again - this is Esh's vinyl - mine is still a few weeks out) Mine will be a different color - i chose the darker grey to more closely match carpet. The light grey was too light (more like this FJ40 vinyl).

I got under the Passenger seat completed yesterday, but no pics (nothing spectacular). Hope to tackle the last bit under driver seat tonight, and maybe the DS door(s)...

Slow going... I really want to get this done so i can start laying in the Luxury Liner pro! Then tape it up (seal it) and start sanding hte body!!

Marc - how much and of what did you use? Damplifier or Damplifier pro - how many sq ft - single layer or doubled (and where)?

Did you take any before and after measurements (db)?

Any trouble with doors staying open w/ extra weight?

thx!!

That was an added bonus for me too with the more "solid" feeling throughout. No issues with the extra weight on the doors on mine.

Hey Ant!

I'm moving slow - too many projects. Love how easy it is to install the DP. Will be calling you soon to get some spectrum for some other areas (inner fender wells).

Can't wait to get bodywork/paint done so i can see how much quieter this will be now!
