Tips for Installing Retainer Clip After Replacing Transfer Shift Lever Seat? '93 4-Runner (1 Viewer)

I just replaced the transfer case shift lever seat in my '93 4WD 4-Runner with the manual transmission. I'm having a lot of trouble holding down the metal cover against the force of the spring so I can install the retainer clip. Are there any tips and/or special tools that will make this easier?

ive used a screwdriver to grab and push with. you just have to hold your mouth just right
