Hi all, new to the forum and cruisers. I recently had a full timing belt service completed on my 2007 which included the timing belt and water pump replacement at 170,000 miles. However, several weeks later I realized on the receipt documentation that the timing belt tensioner was NOT replaced. I had this work performed by a reputable Toyota dealership and assumed it would be replaced as part of the kit.

How bad is it that the timing belt tensioner was not replaced at the same time as the belt and water pump? Is my 2007 100-series LC at risk of serious engine failure due to the belt tensioner age? The thermostat was also not replaced.

Thanks

i wouldn't say that it is that big of a deal, basically 90% of the work would have to be re-done to replace it.
The thermostat can be replaced at any time with minimal effort.

There is no kit for the timing components from Toyota. The tensioner is likely just fine.

The service manual states:
2. INSPECT TIMING BELT TENSIONER

(a) Visually check the seal portion of the tensioner for oil leakage.
NOTICE:
  • If there is only a faint trace of oil on the push rod, the tensioner does not need to be replaced.
  • If leakage is found, replace the tensioner.

(b) Hold the tensioner with both hands and push the push rod strongly as shown to check that it does not move.
  • If the push rod moves, replace the tensioner.
    NOTICE:
Never hold the tensioner push rod facing downward.

(c) Measure the protrusion of the push rod from the housing end.
Standard protrusion:
9.5 to 10.5 mm (0.374 to 0.413 in.)
  • If the protrusion is not as specified, replace the tensioner.

I agree: The T-belt tensioner is likely fine.

If concerned: It's easy to remove and replace. Just remove 1# undershield, remove the 2 12mm bolts and install a new one. Torque bolt to 25ft-lbe and pull the pin.

I'd be more concerned with T-belt pulleys and fan bracket at 170k.

Unfortunately, all to often. Dealership mechanic only do what' on work order the service rep wrote up. They don't tend to replace T-belt tensioner, tensioner pulley or idler pulley. Nor fan bracket, or serp belt tensioner if only marginal. This stuff needs to have failed (most cases) before the do..
