Ive got a replacement set of tie rod ends. Im hoping i didnt order the wrong set. They fit into my tie rods but when I put them into the steering arms coming off the top of the knuckles the nut the nut will not thread on far enought to put the pin in the castle nuts. I have tried to press them in with a ball joint c clamp. Is there something im missing? The arms coming off of the knuckles are around 18-19mm thick.

What set do you have? I had all kinds of issues with this and had some switched around. I had the 555 set

So I assume you're working on your '77, what parts are you trying to install that don't appear to be fitting? What is the parts number set?

This is the culprit. The one on the left in the first picture also the one at the other end of the tie rod that runs parallel to the axle. i

I don't know if it would be enough but it is the only thing I could think of; was all the paint removed from the arm before inserting the tie rod end?

Took your advice wire brushed the paint out of the pin hole and from the flats tried again. Still not close. Took some ruff measurements. The top of the hole was 12.19mm and the top of the taper was 12.9. When the tie rod end is pressed upward with a floor jack the measurement from center of the hole to the top of the steering arm is 7mm. The slot cut in the castle nut 3 mm taller the that.

Have you been able to compare your new tie rod ends to the ones that you removed?

I wasn't talking about the pin hole, I was talking about the tapered hole in the arm. It looks like it has been painted and unless the tapered hole was masked off it is possible there is paint in there. Any paint would prevent the new tie rod end from extending its' furthest out of the arm.

Yes the tapered hole was wire brushed. I ordered a set of 555 tie rod ends as a sanity check. My machinist instinct are telling me is it’s a good possibility it’s a tolerance issue. Granted I don’t have the specs for the steering arm or the tie rod end.
