About cleaning your gun.

Is your gun a gravity feed? If so there is probably a small filter under the cup (hopper). Before you start shooting the finish coat, get some gun cleaning brushes. Unscrew the cup from the top of the gun. Most of the filters have a small white plastic tab. Remove the filter, then using some acetone scrub all your parts using the brushes. Replace the small filter with a new one and reassemble. Often when you are spraying primer those filters can get clogged up. Then you have problems when you shoot the finish.

Practice shooting finish coats on some scrap sheet metal before attempting your truck. Finish coats are thinner then primer and are harder to spray without runs.

Thanks for tips llih! Yeah, I believe it is a gravity feed since the hopper is on the top. We've gotten kind of a cold spell here in Seattle, looks like paint it on hold until it warms up a bit around here. Sucks, I just went out and bought some more primer too.

I wish I had the room for a man town......I don't know how my garage is considered a two car....oh well. It beats my garagless apartment though. All I know is I need to clear some room for a fridge so I can stock it with it with some beer, couch would be nice too for when I'm in the dog house

I found this at the grocery store the other day.....surprisingly enough it has all kinds of info from from sandblasting, sanding, prepping to making you own floorbaard panel to painting.

Just go to the bone yard and pick up a minivan rear seat. They make great shop couches and they are good for small spaces. Although I don't know how well it would work out if you have to sleep on it.

You know what works great for a paint booth is one of those $169.00 portable canvas garages from Costco. I used one because my garage has too much dust and dirt in it. Those tents work pretty good. You can even block off part of the gaps at the bottom and use a fan to create a pressurized semi down draft system.

Well, here is an update on the body paint......

I went with Horizon Blue, this was the color my 40 was originally painted. Unfortunately my digital camera is making the color look turqouise (I swear its Horizon Blue/Horizontal Blue/Valencia Sky Blue). Seemed like they called this color a few different names, the original paint code was like 1208 or something, but I went with the later 808, they all looked pretty similar to me.

Anyhow, all I have left is some airbrush touchup in the small crevises of the window frame, the rear swinging doors and a couple run fixes. Then come the fun job of buffing the hell out of it. All in all I think it came out pretty good, not for someone who never painted a car before. Its funny how the final coat will show every little detail you missed, it really shows all the little rock chips that I didn't see with the primer. Right now its a little too shiny for me, I'm hoping when I use the rubbing compound, it will dull down a little. We'll see.

Some TJ flare I bought, they were grey but I bought some of that bed coat in a can from duplicolor at NAPA, that stuff is great! I think I'm going to pull my roll cage off and paint it with that stuff too!

So was the paint that you used a base coat clear coat paint or just a single stage?

Single stage, I plan to eventually off-road this truck a little, but wanted something decent looking, but easy to touch up if necessary. I figured if I put a clear coat on it I would worry too much about screwing up the paint when using the truck.

Did you do anything to try to contain the spray from going everywhere in your garage, or was it not an issue? I like the canvas costco garage idea, but was curious to know your solution.

I kind of just said f'it about containing the spray. I figured there was so much dust everywhere, whats a little more. I did staple up a big sheet of plastic to create a makeshift booth, but then something fell on it and ripped off the ceiling. Then my stupid staple gun jammed and I couldn't fix it.

I should have wore a hood or something, because when I was done paiting my hair was stiff and slightly blue from the paint dust! I looked like a mad scientist with my respirator on in my jumpsuit.

Well, I finally finished all the body painting and polishing. I think I have had all the saning I can take for a while. I installed a bunch of new hardware, new turn signals, new bib lights and a set of roundeyes headlights. The pictures aren't the greatest since my garage is a little *tight*. I'll post some better ones when I roll it out of the garage and take it for its new maiden voyage to the 4x4 swap meet in Puyallup this weekend.
