saw this in town today. Needs radiator, starter and u joint. Interior is in good shape. Rear hatch glass is busted and both rear door windows as well. Guy wants $1000. Seems like a deal to me. It's a 91 with 274000

I'd get it! If anything it's worth more than that in parts. Or repair the couple hundred dollars worth of items it needs and drive it.

The rust on the hatch would give me some concern and it needs a bumper as well. Depending on how long it has been open to weather, coupled with mechanical issues, I'd start at $500 and go up.

rust is surface only. This is a west Texas truck so rust isn't bad. But who knows what I will find if I get.

Looks just like mine, minus the rust and missing glass. I'd try to nego down a bit from the 1k, it will need some work. How is it mechanically? Is there a leak at the front axle? Does he have many service records for it? Use these as battering rams to get the price down.

Depends on what you're looking to do with it. If you're looking for a cheap truck to build and use long term, I'd say go for it. If you want to try to fix the outstanding issues then sell it, you'll never come close to making any money on it. The 91/92 models just don't go for as much as the 93-97s... If that thing was in very good running condition with proper maintenance I don't think it'd go for much more than $2,500... Mayyyyyyyyyybe $3,000, but that seems like a stretch...

I would imagine that fixing all 3 windows, radiator, starter, u-joints, and miscellaneous other maintenance will take at least $1,500 if you do the work yourself...

Motor oil, ATF, respective filters, diff fluid, transfer case, rebuilding the front (I'd wager this is a definite with the mileage), new vac lines, coolant, misc bulbs, plugs, wires, brake pads/shoes. Even the small sh!t adds up quickly. Try to get it as cheap as you can so that you can have a great toy without scaring your wallet.

thanks guys. I have a 40 already but I want something more comfortable for the wife and kids for hunting. But I really want a 95 or so to build. So may just let this go.

If you have some spare time and ambition and could pick it up for $1000 or less then parting it out would be a good option. I bet you could sell all parts for at least $2000 without putting a dime (other than your time/effort) into it.

While I love 80's I truly dislike the 3fe. I tell people to avoid them like the plague. It's okay in a 62 but in an 80 it just isn't worth the extrta money and downtime finding parts to keep it running. It's a parts truck.

Sinner. :flipoff2:

I thought about buying just to use the head, intake, cpu, harness and etc for a 2fe build for my 40. I have a 4.8ls but I just can't talk myself into pulling the f engine for a Chevy.

Trust me when you have dealt with as many 3fe's as I have it's just not a good option in an 80. Not unless you are mechanically inclined or have money to burn. A 3fe 80 will never increase in value and only cost more than a FZJ to fix in the long run.

I don't know what kind of crack you've been smoking TrollHole, but I've probably built, modified, or wrenched on more Cruisers in my time than you have SEEN! The 3FE is the best engine Mr T ever put in a 80! I don't know what your "working on it all the time" for..... they don't eat head gaskets, trannies are prehistoric...... but simple and reliable, and if I had to jump in one of my Cruisers today and had to be on the West Coast in 3 days.... I would take my 91..... I might have to "draft" a 18 wheeler on the big hills, and refuel on the run, but mechanically I have no doubt my 3FE is the MOST dependable!
As far as values..... I would talk the seller down. From the items listed as busted, I would guess that thing has been rodded out pretty good! Fixed, and put back to stock would bring you close to $4000 on the East Coast. I haven't seen a 80 on Craigslist anywhere close for over a year!

OK, 3FE reliability and reputation aside, this made me chuckle a little bit. :) You do know who Trollhole is, right? I'd venture that he's been elbow deep in more cruisers than I've ever seen.

Lol....yea, but I can't let anyone slam the 3 fe, don't care who it is.
I knew this would draw a response, but I figured it would be Trollhole, not one of his "hit men". Lol
Anyways...... glad I could elevate your blood pressure for you.

I just can't figure out what isn't dependable on the 3FE? I've been in Toyotas since the late 60's, I own 4 of them now (Cruisers). And, honestly my 91 with the 3FE has given me the least amount of trouble. IDK.... maybe something in the water out there in W. SC?

Would you like for me to keep going?

As a shop that works on them with customers expecting us to fix them how can we do that if all we do is swap a broken ass old part for a working old ass part. As well harnesses are not getting any newer.

Look I love everything about Land Cruisers but when someone points me to one with a 3fe I ask when something fails are they prepared to wait and do they have the money to continue to spending on a truck where there is no value. Toyota decided about 4 years ago to stop supporting the motor. There are very few aftermarket companies that are willing to step up to the plate for a fuel injection system that was made for two years.
