thinking about buying this 80

I provide 3FEs to the market on a regular basis :)

I do agree with Marshall, at some point the wisdom in buying a vehicle with a 3FE simply is not there and we have reached that point. Parts support is what makes all the difference when you are dealing with 25 plus year old vehicles. The folks that have been hording 3FE motors and parts for years are now in the catbird seat.

Thats why doing a Cadillac conversion makes sense, right?

While I love 80's I truly dislike the 3fe. I tell people to avoid them like the plague. It's okay in a 62 but in an 80 it just isn't worth the extrta money and downtime finding parts to keep it running. It's a parts truck.

I suppose eventually IF something fails. I guess I just haven't gotten to that point.

They stopped supporting the motor because there isn't demand. There isn't demand because they didn't sell a ton of them. But also because they don't fail.

I know you see and work on these all of the time. And I respect your opinion. But saying not to buy a 91-92 because some day... is insane. The same could be said for any 80 series. There are plenty of 1FZ-FE parts that are NLA. And that motor is much more difficult to work on.

Plus, half the parts you listed are related to smog BS that isn't needed and wasn't installed anywhere besides NA.

As long as I have beer and piss my 3FE will run.

In stock form new it is just barely adequate to power an 80. Add 25 years and bigger tires and you are just asking for failure. For the guy who works on their own junk a 3fe isn't a problem. But the 80 is becoming more popular as a collectors truck. More people are looking to buy them and most of these first time land cruiser owners don't know what they are getting into when they get a 91-92 3fe.

The 1fz-fe is next on the chopping block with Toyota. Just wait. But there are enough of them out there that aftermarket parts aren't a problem yet.

I have a spare 3FE motor and bus tranny. And will soon have a spare 1FZ-FE with tranny and transfer case.

I've never bought in to the "collector" hype of 80s. I love them but I don't know that I'd call them "collectors"... But, to each their own.

Time, just time.

If we are giving up on the 3FE's because of parts availability, then eventually we will give up on 1FE's for the same reason? And just say to hell with all 80's? Then say the 60's and 40's aren't worth it either? Bad adittude in my eyes.

Barely enough power for the 80?
All the emission s*** is obsolete..... who cares?
Most them parts that are "no longer" available are simple to "adapt" from another vehicle. Worst case, good old CNC is standing by to produce.
Lol... 93-97 have what......25 extra hp? I don't know if you ever get to URE, or the coast, but I'd be willing to run it against any of your newer 80's. Bring cash though..... I don't do charity.
And maybe I'll get rid of the wife's Shelby 500 too..... parts are getting "hard" to find for that too.

Lord have mercy.

I never said give up. But you have to be realistic about expectations. I think repowered trucks are in most of our futures.

LOl.

IAC Disontinued
Throttle Body Discontinued
Fuel Pressure regulator Discontinued
2 of the 3 efi water temp switches Discontinued
Air switching valve Discontinued
Air pump Discontinued
Distributor Discontinued
EGR Discontinued

Would you like for me to keep going?

As a shop that works on them with customers expecting us to fix them how can we do that if all we do is swap a broken ass old part for a working old ass part. As well harnesses are not getting any newer.

Look I love everything about Land Cruisers but when someone points me to one with a 3fe I ask when something fails are they prepared to wait and do they have the money to continue to spending on a truck where there is no value. Toyota decided about 4 years ago to stop supporting the motor. There are very few aftermarket companies that are willing to step up to the plate for a fuel injection system that was made for two years.

You mean from Toyota? Or from every aftermarket parts maker?

But yea, if you truly can't get a few of these parts, then yea, that would be a death blow...especially the distributor, fuel pressure regulator, and water temp switches and IAC.

I suspect TNGA will make it interesting no matter which 80 we own as far as oem goes. Aftermarket definitely gives the nod to the 1fz-fe

That said, I've always loved that color combo and $1000 sure sounds cheap to me.

3FE 150 HP & 214 FT/lb torque - 1FZ-FE 212 hp & 275 ft/lb torque , 62 more hp is huge in these percentages
Manafre the oldest Toyota Land Cruiser parts Distributor in the world Expert's recommend steering clear of the FJ80 and waiting out for a FZJ80 due to it's much better engine.

I would buy that truck, take out the 3fe, and put a 6bt motor in it. Sell the 3fe parts off of the 80 left over from the 6bt swap to guys here that need them. Everybody is happy.
I like the way your brain works.
