There might be a way to remove that factory "tint"..... (1 Viewer)

What year is your cruiser? My 1992 didn't appear to have any tint. Maybe this was a tint that someone else had done after purchasing and the stickers pulled it off?
Most 91s and 92s didn't have this tint, just about every 93-97 had it. Known as "Solar Energy Reflecting" glass, I believe...

Im going to buy a piece of 80 glass from a junkyard and conduct some high-tech experiments.

1992 didn't have tint that I'm aware of. My truck doesn't have it either.

Muriatic acid IS Hydrochloric acid

Exactly. I have some 25N HCl in the lab I could test on some spare glass I have. I could also test Nitric Acid, Boric Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Phosphoric acid (as in the Coke)

Disclaimer: Im hoping Coke works, I won't be doing anything with any HCl!

A bath of Hydroflouric Acid was used to remove the CVD film from our equipment. Nasty stuff...goes through the skin to the bone...and not available over the counter in high concentrations, though it is a component in rust stain remover gels.

I don't have any hydrofluoric. I do have hydrofluorasilicic I could test. Of course, Coke is easiest if it gives even results. Phosphoric should do it since Coke worked

85% may need to be diluted :D

I'm thinking a combination of some fluid/chemical and sunlight might do the trick.

A hammer will take care of the tint also. Take it right out.

I'm thinking that the tint is indeed imbedded in the glass somehow and that sticker on there for years has caused it to react differently to the sunlight than the surrounding glass. It's just a theory and I could be very wrong.

Seems like a fun lab to work in

If by CVD you mean Chemical Vapor Deposition, that definitely IS a fun lab to work in.

My guess is that the tint is some organic(polymer or paint-like) treatment to the glass and then the "mirroring" is done by a process similar to CVD(PVD). The reaction of the glue of the sticker over time, possibly with some interaction of UV from the sun, stripped it all clean. If that is true, maybe acid isn't the key to removal, but maybe a strong enough solvent(MEK, Xylene?) could do it?

I haven't been able to find any information yet

I like threads like this.

I found a junked 80 series Ina pick and pull that had a spray type pattern on the back tint that was "clear".

I bought the glass and uses a acid solution and was able to remove all of the factory tint...

When I tried the same process on my side back windows it "frosted" the glass making impossible to see through...

I had to buy factory clear for the sides but now I have all matching clear that has since been tinted black.

There may be a different coating on the hatch vs the side windows due to the need to adhere the defroster grid to the hatch window... hint, hint...

Also, I wouldn't recommend using HCl or HF on the glass after reading up a little. Either will definitely etch the glass.

I used my steam cleaner... came off super easy. 2 layers of tint, factory and aftermarket.

What happens if you just stick some duct tape to it and pull it off?
I wonder if the tint itself breaks down over time and is just easily peeled after ~20years?

The factory tint is part of the glass making process... It's deff not a soft coat application after the fact or film...

Spent 13yrs in the glass / window industry..

The back glass seemed to have a different application, and I was able to "dissolve" the colorant off the glass. This was great seeing how the back glass is the $$$ part for clear... The sides door glass wasn't that bad, and the back quarter glass was swapped to clear anyways for WagonGear flip ups...

Got pics of your ride AMMO? I would like to see a Sage Metallic 80 with clear glass that has been tinted all the way around. I think it would look really good with the black pearl emblems. Something about the B and C pillars being black on the 80 in general make it look really cool with tinted windows that match and are actually blackish or gray, and not bronze or reflective.

Yeah that works for film, but I don't think the 91s and 92s had the "solar energy reflecting" glass.

Another thing I noticed, is that when looking in from the outside, I can see the thickness of the glass and then see the outline of where the sticker was and the difference in tint and its definitely on the inside surface of the glass.
Im trying to buy a piece of rear quarter glass off ebay and the seller is dragging his feet....

As far as the back glass, here's a quote from a member on the same thread posted in the 100 section:

kyoso23- It's some type of coating. The dealer mine came from had their pricing sheet taped to the back window. When the idiot tried to remove the tape, he scrubbed it with a green pad and it scraped the tint off of where he was scrubbing.[/QUOTE]

This is definitely a separate coating on the glass. I found a little info on it, but I still don't know how it is applied or what it is. I just know for sure it is a separate coating. We can stop debating that point.

Let's figure out how to get it off. We know mild acid should work. I'm curious about solvents because it would be less likely to damage the glass.

Magic Eraser!
