Word. I'm definitely gonna just pull my radiator core, fenders and liners to do my engine swap. Looks like it made working so much easier

Hey, I can rebuild aisin carbs too!!

I like how you have no wires on your inner fenders. It has a bit of an old school hot rod look :grinpimp:

Just came across this pic of how my cruiser once was hooked up. I had to take this pic to figure out how to put it back together (even with it i dont think i stood a chance) This picture is insane. My heart goes out to all you smogged cruisers!

Nice job PD! I can honestly say this is one of my favorite builds in the 60's section- and its not even a build. Your attention to detail is amazing. You should have no problems with that helicoil.

We need more full truck pictures, including your finished interior, when you wrap this up.

alright... hood is back from linex- those guys are awesome. Before i took it to them i scraped off all the factory seam sealer that seamed to be gooped on randomly. It wasnt even doing its job anymore, the frame had seperated from the sheet metal. So i got some nice 3m seam sealer and filled in where i could so the frame wouldnt vibrate off the sheet metal. I used a whole caulk bottle of the sealer and it was quite messy. I was going to dynamat the hood, so i just figured linex would do the trick and look significantly better in the process. So those guys (linex) took 3m urethane and filled the seams to be smooth with the sheet metal:

It looks real good. Got most of the underhood sprayed, basically just the parts the factory dampener covered.

The hood does weigh about 10-15 lbs more now. That sucks, but on the other hand- it is/will be significantly harder to dent, it will keep noise/heat down and, it looks amazing. Its the ultimate finishing touch. My wife comes downstairs to find me with a beer in my hand just staring in the garage at the engine. She gets pretty jealous....:o
I cant help it, ive never undertaken a project of this magnitude. Its extremely gratifying. Im guessing i put about 100 hours into it (Im new at the whole resto thing:)) and i wont even post the dollar amount, but rest assured i will be paying it off the rest of the year. In my opinion it was well worth it. Everything else on the cruiser should be much easier. Not too much to do, but the interior and all the dash guts will be new next year. As long as the government lets it happen, i think this would be an awesome gift for a future son.

I will keep everybody posted, the exhaust goes on monday!

You might check out the gas shock mod in the sticky section. Then, the added weight won't bother you as the shocks will be doing the work. Simply awesome work on you engine compartment. You have raised the bar way up.

WOW great work .. I would be scared to drive it now ... it might get dirty ..... o never mind lets hit a mud hole

but realy great work man I wish I had the will to do work half that clean...

What a beauty... Great work! Your attention to detail is amazing! So what are your final impressions with the way you desmogged and how the engine runs? I've never seen so much ripped off one of these engines before. My engine is desmogged, but I still have some vac hoses i.e. vac advance, fuel decel, etc.... I don't see any vac hoses left in your desmog.

X2 you will love not having to lift the hood. One of the best mods I've done!

To answer your questions- I still have the the vac advance hooked up, but thats it. No smog anything. It runs amazing. I get 14-15mpg mixed driving. It accelerates nicely and idles smooth. I got it to 70 on the interstate the other day just fine. I have no decel fuel cut off, but it has yet to diesel on me. It runs better than it ever has before, very very smooth. The weber carb is extremely simple to tune, I dont know what peoples deal with it is. Tried to flood it on some hills and i couldnt do it. The only potential issue i can forsee where that the stock carb has built in provisions for is going to high altitude. I live at sea level but go camping etc at about 5k in the cascades. Ive yet to see how it will do up high, i know it will run rich, but i dont know what i can really do about it short of advancing the timing before going up that high. Im sure its fine, since it will only be for short periods of time.

I got more pics coming soon- got rid of all chrome around the windows. Got that new black window lock to replace the chrome on the window seals. It looks much, much better.

Nice! I'm really diggin how clean the engine bay is... great job!

How has this thing been running? Or has it even left the garage

Its been running good. Its running rich (i think) but ive been too lazy to mess with the jets. only about 12 mpg too now, which kind of sucks but what can you do.

Im in the middle of redoing the interior, no real progress yet but i will put pics up as i get it done.

I was EXTREMELY happy to find the OEM hand throttle though, not having cruise control kills me on the highway and that thing is close enough for me. (and cheap)

Have you had any dieseling issues? Mine runs rich too. Diesels all the time. Can you post a picture of your distributor? I wanna see what you have hooked up and where. I'm gonna be working on this during my one month off. I don't want my stupid truck to diesel anymore. Really makes me mad.

And you know you wanna tell me where you got the Hand Throttle and show it to me :)

That cruiser is clean. Im going to go the desmogged route with the weber conversion also. It's good to hear that it was a fairly straight forward swap. Keep us posted on the interior.

Alright, parts finally coming in! Looked like christmas on my front door today! Now the interior is going back together. Replaced all wear items under dash including heater blower motor, heater core, speedo cable, all OEM. Heater core is getting soldered at the joint with the pipe, based on threads ive read here. Also since my a/c has been unhooked since i had it, i just took it out and replaced the interior items with the non a/c versions- basically just one duct and a new heater control bezel without the a/c button hole.
Got a new glove box since mine was trashed, and the new one is much, much nicer. Its plastic not cardboard like the last. Also got some exterior stuff too... Non usa grey front end (headlight doors and grille) and some non usa oem mirrors!! more pics when its lighter....

I just cried from the sheer joy of seeing those pics.

Keep them coming.

oh yeah and just like vtcruiser did, i redid every single piece of deteriorating foam gasket in the hvac system and thoroughly cleaned all heater ducts with a giant pipe cleaner from my hookah :smokin:

and just like the engine bay, all new screws, bolts, etc ;)

That is the sweetest, cleanest FJ60 engine bay I have ever seen. I love the air cleaner. Weber idle jets are easy to swap out and affect a large part of your driving, probably good to start with those, go down a size and see what that gets you. Getting the distributor recurved will wake it up even more. You have probably lost 50 pounds worth of smog junk.
