I took the weekend off and went camping up around Silverton CO, so I have not made much progress. I believe I have torn my meniscus in my right knee on a run. I am getting a second opinion this week. If it does not heal up it will affect my pace on the project, it is very annoying.

Here are a few pictures of from my trip.

I did spend a little time tonight trying to pick my direction for fitting the oil filter. I have been collecting different oil filter housings and coolers from 1uz, 2uz, and 3uz engines plus a 90 degree Ford racing adapter in the hopes one of the them would be give me some sort of advantage in fitting the oil filter. I am trying to keep the oil cooler in place.

This is the collection I have to work from.

This configuration uses a 1uz mount and the Ford adapter to redirect the filter toward the oil pan. What I don’t like about this set up is the oil filter extends about 1.5 to 2 inches below the oil pan.

The next version uses a 2uz filter housing mount that I lucked into when picking up a free 2uz engine core. I don’t know what it came out of but this mount was shorter than the 2uz mount that came on the original 100 series 2uz. I attached the Ford 90 degree adapter to angle it back but it has to be angled under the frame and I don’t love it.

The last option and the one I am leaning towards is using the stock 2uz shorter filter housing with the cooler in place. The shorter housing moves the filter far enough back that it clears the pan hard mount. I cannot fit a stock 2uz filter here but I think I could use a shorter filter. I expect with a smaller filter I would just have to change it a little more frequently and given it is not my daily driver I am ok with that.

The 1fzfe filter is not big and it works fine. I think a smaller filter should work well even for a DD. You could check it after 3k miles by splitting it open to see level of clogging. The 2UZ is a smooth engine. Key thing is to check the filtration throughput of the filter you are using to make sure it matches that of the 2uz OEM filter so that you do not encounter oil starvation.

Making me homesick! Hopefully, after the swelling leaves, it's not a full tear. I hate knees and love running.

I have been an avid runner most of my life. My knees are starting show the wear and tear from it now, not that I am that old. This isn’t my first tear, like you said hopefully it is not too bad after after the swelling is down. I will be back to running as soon as I can.

I understand why you would be home sick that is a great area up there.

I hope it goes easy for you man! I still haven't torn my knees, zero ideas how that is with my lifestyle. I have scares every once and a while. But yes, that area is hands down amazing depending on what you love! Can't wait to be home in a month.

I didn’t take pictures but last night I pulled the intake off and replaced all of the filter baskets, O-rings, and insulators on all 8 injectors with new then put it back together.

This engine was purchased from another member and already had the starter swapped for a remanufactured Denso unit, the timing belt, water pump, thermostat and such had already been done previously. Everything that I feel should be serviced is done or had been done recently. The engine itself only had about 160k on it, so I expect I should get another 160k before I have to dig into it again.

Today I spent about an hour at two parts stores trying to find an oil filter equal to the stock filter for the 2uz but about a half inch shorter, so I could fit it in the frame rail. I am happy to report I found one.

I found that the Wix filters on the Napa site list all the necessary specs. So I used the Wix 2uz filter as the base for specs. I went about opening boxes looking for something close to the right size and would then check the specs. to see if it would work. The 2uz filter number is 51358 and the shorter version number is 51056. The specs. are the same except the shorter version has a higher burst psi number.

The short filter is a little more than a half inch shorter compared to the Mobil-1 filter I have.

It fits and will work. I will keep looking for other options. I found some race filters for the 1uz that should fit but I could not find specs. for them. I will update if I find a better option.

I got the oil set up all together. I really lucked out with the free core 2uz I picked up. The filter housing I used was from it and I was also able to use the hard cooler line pictured after the swap. If you are pulling that part out of a wrecking yard I would suggesting grabbing that cooler line. It has a slightly different angle to align with the shorter housing. You can use all stock parts if have it.

Made some progress and finish installing the firewall section. I used a spot welder to attach the firewall section to the top of the cowl and side panel. It worked great. I used 3M weldable seem sealer on the top portion of the panel and the spot welder welded through without an issue.

Not all pictured here but I used every type of metal clamp I had to line panel up flush at the seems. The wood clamps were perfect across the top.

All done except some primer and paint. I plan to install a later model rib support but that will happen a little later.

Looks great. I have that same spot welder. Seriously skecthy.
Skecthy?? Please share. It worked fine for me but I learned you have to be quick with the trigger. The welds seem solid and the practice welds I did with it would not come apart during my torture test. It is a 220v model if there is a safety concern with it please share. I don’t want to cook myself.

No, mine worked great too. What I meant is the tool itself seems skecthy. Like you might fry yourself.

Lol, I thought the same thing which is why I asked? I watched several Utube videos to try and make sure I didn’t cook myself. It worked well but I understand what your saying.

I have the same one. I found adjusting the gap for different thickness metals is important as well as cleaning the contact points. Also, I may do about 20 welds, then let it cool down for a 30 minutes. not 100% duty rating.

Sorry about your knee Ive been down that road but added a ACL to mine. The 45 is looking great and fast as well I am very impressed. Good luck with the rest I cant wait to see it finished...

Any thoughts or plans for the throttle linkage hole?

No plan at the moment. The 2uz I am using is drive by wire, so no throttle cable. I am planning to try and find a way to install a hand throttle but that will like go directly to the pedal. I will probably weld shut what ever holes I don't need, I am just not to a point that I have thought through all the routing for the harness and such yet.

I installed a hand-throttle. I bought an extra pedal, but I used the original, and just drilled a 1/8" or 3/16" hole in the plate that operates the throttle positioner switch. I used a choke cable, and a doorman cable stop.

I will probably have to do something similar. I have this cool old school screw adjustment throttle control that came off the flat bed 45. I hope to find a way to use when I get to that point.
