I was the guy in the red 4Runner. I found out why I couldn't make it across the rocks. My passenger side half-shaft broke. Ouch.

whats up dude! so do you need a new axle in the front? im the guy who pulled you out...:D:steer: my thread is "Bessie the Chevota's Build Thread." Machinist has video of you getting pulled out by me...;)

I'm getting that video churned out as we speak.

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse taitai907, at least its not a bad transmission or transfer case! :p

BTW i know pretty much exactly what replacing that half shaft entails, i just replaced my Axle seals and did a rebuild.

I appreciate your help guys. I'm just happy that my dad didn't put my head on a pike. As it turns out, my half shaft broke long before you guys even arrived. I think it was when I tried the frame twister.

Here's that video I mentioned:

i bounced an idea around with robustbambi about maybe making a 60 series "young adult" tech thread for 60s since it seems like there are a good number of younger LC owners, what do you think?

cool idea, although i'd only be a part of it for another couple weeks, then I'll be 2 years inactive on the board and on the 60. just thought i'd voice my opinion though:)

Leaky Pinion Seal

The other day I took the 60 out for a short drive, parked it, and went to hangout with some friends. When I got back home later I noticed oil had been dripping under my truck, and it was coming from the rear diff. So now I'm going to have to replace the pinion seal.

I ordered a new seal from MarlinCrawler on Monday and it should get here by the end of today, but after reading through a few threads about replacing them, I'm kind of confused as to what I need to do exactly.
Am I mistaken, or is this more or less what I need to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15zHpz6Zx8c

I also may have found out why my transfer case likes to pop out of gear for no apparent reason. Looks like the shift lever has been rubbing against the boot at times. It would make sense too, because I'ts been poping out of 4-Hi but staying in 4-Lo. (4-Hi to 2-Hi is straight forward, so pushing into the boot would pop it out) Pismo was a bit annoying with it constantly poping out of gear. So what can I do to aleivate this? Is it time for new engine and transmission mounts?

I had to get my rear pinion seal taken care of last month. For no apparent reason, it just started leaking like crazy. And my parents didn't trust me enough to do it myself lol, they figured I'd tighten the nut too much and destroy the bearing causing an even more expensive problem...
Good luck, it looked like a fun little project.

Don't really know anything about your 2hi/4hi problem.

I think I have seen something on the 4Hi issue. If I remember correctly there was something that was either stuck in the boot that was causing it to push against it, it was the engine mounts, or you could just widen the hole a bit and it would be fine.

Good way to check if it is the engine mounts is to leave it in gear with the truck running and foot on the clutch and rev the engine hard and high real quick. Watch the the shift lever for side to side movement. If your shifter is moving excessively then it is time for new mounts. At least that is what I remember reading.

hey darrell, if for some reason you need to open up the axles on each side i have a 54mm socket you can borrow for the steering knuckle nuts. ill be back in the area late feb so we can try and make a trip to hollister or carnegie if you are available.

as for the 4hi-lo keep me updated, my T-case binds on all gears and very occasionally pops out of L4 to N. if its an easy fix i want to know.

Piping out of,low 4 has, been fixed by ppl I've talked to by replacing the spring and detent ball in the transfer case. Marlin crawler sells a heavy duty spring and new detent balls for less than a buck, I ordered them too, just to have e'en in there.

Anyway, search for spring and detent ball and you should be able to find more info.

i could prob just steal the one off my transmission. do the springs and detent work off of 4 runners or newer land crusers?
