Is it me or does Guero's food pretty much suck? I remember really liking it in 2002 or 2003 and moved away for a number of years. We checked it out after moving back and it was awful.

No, you're correct, Guerro's food is gawdawful. They got hugely popular when Bill Clinton said it was his favorite Austin restaurant. Soon after that endorsement the food quality went downhill in a hurry.

This thread might warrant us starting something like Cottonland did...we could do the same thing for bars.

I've lived in Austin off and on for over 20 years and I know I have not even scratched the surface of places to eat and drink. It seems I go to the same places all the time and its hit or miss just relying on the Chronicle or Yelp.

Guero's sucked after they moved from Oltorf to trendy ass SoCo.

Um - there was nothing but hookers and crack dealers down there when they moved in, they were a big part of making it "trendy" ;). That being said, it's pretty much what it is at this point, decent but not worth writing home about. We ate at Vespaio down the way a few weeks ago, pretty good -

Gueros food = not so good, but their simple margaritas are some of the best in town

Yeah, and then they came along and ruined everything. :hillbilly:

Sully, why did you delete your post? I think you discovered what a lot of folks know about downtown Austin. It can be kinda touristy, there are a lot of drunk college kids, and gay folks live here! Still not a bad place, but you have to pick your spots...

Well to be honest, I deleted it because the grammar errors were thick. I guess the beers must have caused that. iPhone and alcohol is a bad combo. Honestly the bar scene here is pretty good. I think if that is what you are wanting, it's much better than most other places I have been. The Ginger man was a a real nice place and I tried a few different types but moose drool was the winner. They need pretzel bowls! I was not impressed by Fado, it was the typical chain "Irish" bar. As a person that has a grandmother from Ireland I would say that even my 78 year old grandmother that drinks a fifth of whiskey a day would be shamed to know Fado prides itself as a Irish pub. It might as well be a Mexican tequila bar playing Elton John music. The Capitol building is very impressive! My biggest complaint is the lack of restaurants downtown. We ended up eating at Maria Maria which was excellent. I had the Grilled Wild Salmon and it was grilled to perfection.

Haha..I spied your drunken post regarding the per capita of gay bars downtown too.

You need to explore outside of the downtown area really to get a flavor for Austin. There are a TON of great restaurants and great bars as well. In my opinion the majority of those are NOT downtown.

We need to set up some type of cruiser crawl for your next visit. Don't let your first impression of the town keep you away.

I lived in San Antonio for 3 years and wasn't the least bit impressed compared to Austin, but IIRC you are not the biggest fan of San Antonio either.

I've lived in all the major cities in Texas and Austin has the best to offer in my opinion. There is no competition.

Fado is a franchise establishment that's exactly the same in Atlanta, D.C., Chicago, and so on.... Meh. :meh:

You'll get no sympathy here. Fado is a fake Irish Bar, and a crappy one at that. You were warned. ;)

But...but...what about Lubbock, and Waco?

Yea, Lee I must have skipped over that part hah..

Pat, you are right. I would much rather live in Austin than San Antonio. However I would much rather be back in Colorado or up north stuck in snow right now.

When we left, we decided to take a cruise down 290, stopped in dripping springs and had a real decent breakfast at Cafe 131. I asked the lady if I could get a side order of biscuits to go with the country boy breakfast. She responded with "you have never ate here before have you? We serve big servings". Anyways good place to eat. I admire the lake in Austin, it was nice to see a bunch of people strolling around if, however If I lived there I would invest in a kayak. Hope you all have a great day!

Yeah, I can't say I blame you regarding Colorado.

Glad you got to see and experience some other things. Yeah, Lake Austin (aka Ladybird) is nice. We go there with the dog practically every Sunday. I have been seriously thinking of getting a kayak because we go there so much.

Yea ladybird is really nice, if I Iived there I would definitely be investing in a kayak or canoe. I was at costco a little bit ago and you can get a canoe for $400 and a single person kayak for $150 I think

Actually it's Town Lake that was renamed Lake Lady Bird. Lake Austin still exists. It's one of the 7 Highland Lakes.

I can't bring myself to call it Lake Lady Bird, even though she was the only classy member of that crooked family. Still Town Lake to me.

Yeah, I meant Town Lake. Not sure why I called it Lake Austin in my post.

Of course its always Town Lake to you since you're a grumpy old man...

Damn straight, and I was this way when I was your age.

Probably not the best example since you're officially a grumpy old man your own self...:p

I'm not a big Johnson family historian so I'd like to hear what made the Johnson family corrupt. Not being a smart ass, I'm interested.
