Dude, welcome to the the AR-xx abyss 😜

I know Aero well, they are milled ~75mi S of me & my LGS sells the snot out of them.
Tight tolorances & if I wasn’t such a Spikes Tactical billet lower whore, Aero would be on my short list of alternates.
Their upper & lowers are machined to the point it is like closing the door on a new Lexus.

Best analogy I can think of.

The AR abyss is a scary and expensive place!!

You make a good case for me to just get an aero upper and lower and skip the BCM and save the $350-400. I just keep reading that everyone prefers the BCM upper if you have the coin.

But...I did just find that a gun store on my way to the outer banks tomorrow may have a BCM Recce 16 in stock...may have to stop by tomorrow.

Yeah, it can get stupid $$ for all the crud once you have something all in your mind.

I think you’re smart - draw a line in the sand/your budget & really it’s all simple swappable parts once you have the core lower, upper and barrel/handguard you prefer.

Bolt carrier groups, charge handle, box or std triggers -all are like simple Legos once you have the main “frame” of it all as to what you like/fits & how you want to use it.

Even buying the complete upper / lowers & just sandwich together is also as I bet you see a way to save decent $$ - the market is truely an ‘abyss’.

But a fun one ;)

Oh c'mon John - just tell him to start with the Mosin..... :)
Hmmm. Getting the urge to go fix bayonets on my Remington and Westinghouse Nagants*...just like the Czar wanted (Russia didn't issue scabbards because they intended for bayonets to be attached at all times). 5.5' OAL isn't too long for a house gun, is it???:p

*Yep, those USA manufacturers produced Nagants under contract for Russia because they couldn't make enough for themselves during WW1.

After much reading, I think I'm looking at an Aero M4E1 lower with a BCM recce 16 BFH MCMR upper and BCM BCG and charge handle. I've also been looking at Aero BCG and CH but the pricing isn't much different. Seems to be a good solid mid range option. Anyone have one of these setups?

My buddy has a full aero build that I like shooting and another has the BCM upper that he swears by. I know these are more mid range options than I was discussing before but hoping to curb the need to build another shortly after by starting with a mid range option since I tend to do that...

Reason I'm thinking of the Aero lower is a) a full Recce 16 is not in stock and hasn't been for a while it looks like, b) the BCM lowers aren't available either, c) i like the integrated trigger guard on the M4E1, flared magwell, threaded pin for the bolt catch and the general aesthetic of the Aero.

Other option is to go with an assembled aero upper for ~$350-400 less.

This rabbit hole is deeper than expected...
I took a class this past weekend and a guy was running this exact BCM upper on his rifle. It ran just fine. His lower was from a different manufacturer, but I never asked which one. BCM uppers are usually easy to pick out if you're paying attention. Paul Buffoni and crew at BCM know what they're doing.

@gasman4u - details on the class?? Was it local?? I tried to sign up for a few during COVID but they were all cancelled.
@Pick It was a two day fighting carbine class put on by NC scout in Caswell County. He runs brushbeater.org. A solid class for any beginner/intermediate shooter as he has legitimately "been there and done that."

Even if you don't do his class, get training (if you haven't already) and VET YOUR TRAINER. There's a lot of REALLY good places to train in NC. And some not so good unfortunately. If you want rec's, let me know and I will elaborate further.

Headed to the beach and stopped at that gun store I mentioned yesterday that had a brand new BCM Recce 16 LW in stock somehow. Bought it for under MSRP and a nice carry bag as well. Really happy with it and the price! Made it a no brainer for roughly the same money as buying an aero unit.

Anyone own/fire a HK SP5 (the "consumer" MP5)? I wonder if they have the same build quality as the MP5.

Call of Duty fans say they are as accurate as a sniper rifle from 200 meters . . from what I have heard - I don't play Call of Duty LOL.

^^Joke - sorry.

I have this Ruger 9 MM Carbine, and frankly, I just don't love it - its long, heavy and awkward. It does take Glock magazines, though, and is VERY accurate for a 9 MM.

HK MP7 in .40 S&W?

LOL - Well compared to the SP5 its a steal. Checking with Son to make sure he doesn't want the Ruger. Wife doesn't know the cost of the SP5, so . . . yea don't look at Gun Broker.

You have one? Or asking if that is what the SP5 is? Or if I should get that?

Its just a MP5 in 9mm, but they do make larger calibers. I think all the "MP" stuff is not available through the regular market place, though.

Are you looking for a PCC for range time fun? Or to have for other purposes?

I don’t own one myself, but had a friend that had one. I shot it quite a bit at the range one day. His had the full non-folding synthetic stock. It felt just like the MP5. Fun to shoot…if your buddy paid for it.

I’m a fan of the original PCC though…

I've been searching for something to fit between the hand gun and the rifle in size. Would want it to be 9mm. The Ruger is great for what it is, but, really want something a little shorter - I have a SBR and a full length 300 BLK that I am comfortable with at those lengths.

For PCC-like things -I have been as short as a G17L with an "arm brace" (don't ask lol) - and some other things . .

I have a suppressor that I would like to make sure I can put on if/when wanted as well - don't really want to go pursue custom threading from a gunsmith.

So:
  • Pistol length barrel, with option for arm brace, but not required (not doing another SBR)
  • 9MM
  • Threaded Barrel
  • Semi-Auto
  • Easy break/down/cleaning (like AR or Glock)
  • Possible mounting of one of my existing optics (EoTech or SRO), but not "required" - don't really want to interrupt the sights.

Thanks!

Edit: Don't want to admit it is for "range time" - but hopefully that is all it is - wouldn't be for hunting tho. :)

At the risk of sounding like a broken record - I’m going to offer the “AR-x for every occasion” idea.

Cost effective, and you choose the barrel length you want.
For extra compact-ness, you can go to a folder hinge ahead of the buffer tube/pistol brace.

You could tailor the thing to exactly the length/accuracy compromise you want & now you can choose between Glock or the classic AR-9 Colt stick mags.
(I have Colt, not as ‘tacticool’ as Glock, but the last round bolt catch works when Glock doesn’t nearly as well)

And it is 18,000x more accurate than my Intratec
But that wasn’t bought for anything but giggles.

Just an idea.

A full length example of the Colt style:

YT vid / bottom of page has Glock mags IIRC.

But their 9mm lowers w/ Colt pattern aren’t that $$$

I found an old Sportsman's Guide catalog from 2006 today. And then I remembered back then thinking that I wish the prices would come down.

It was funny seeing how many leather holsters there were, while there was only one or two Kydex models. I'll post up some more random pages if enough people 'like' this post and want more.

@JohnVee - gave it a ‘like’ but I can’t take thinking what stuff was back then. ;)

It did make me remember my 1st Colt 1911 buy (2yrs+ prior to when they quit pistols back around ‘00), and a few others from that era.

Heck, glad I bought quality 5.56 mid/late Trump-era for ~$325 on my doorstep.

That & I got into reloading long ago too.
