I almost joined the navy in 1979. Jobs were hard to find and I went and took the Navy exam, tested in the top 3 percentile and they wanted me to go into submarines, 6 year sign up. NO WAY!!! I got a job and passed on the 6 year deal. They continued trying to recruit me for 3 years to come. Funny part was I moved out of my Mom's house right about that time and my sister then rented my Mom's house from her. The recruiters would call early on Sat mornings and bother my sister Ever cloud has a silver lining.

You know all negative comments from Army guys about the Air Force really come from a place of being jealous?

Oh yeah it's all in good fun. I got no problem with it. It's good ole sibling rivalry in my book. I looked into all the branches but ultimately wanted to work on big airplanes. I'll never forget my first week at boot camp. My DI was an 8 year Marine Vet. He said while he was in Japan he went and hung out with some AF guys. He said "you F'ing guys live way better than we do." When his enlistment was up he joined the AF. lol. Guess he wasn't kidding.

Jealous nah... super jealous yah.. my grandfather was in the Air Force and tried to talk me into it and I was like nah I wanna join the army.

In 2 months I figured out I was so wrong...
-Air Force guys attached to us got paid a sub standard living allowance in my same barracks

-At NTC these guys got a sweet ass tent with a heater while I got a bad ass bivy sack next to my track

-Got to run with headphones in.... that was the real winner in my book lol

Gun related what do you guys think should I have a m1 carbine and am thinking about putting a folding paratrooper stock should I go for it??

I loves my M1 Carbine, ammo is still fairly cheap, mags are plentiful, and it is fun to shoot.

Para stock? Not my cup of tea, but there are some really nice repro para folders out there

I’ve been looking at a transferable M1 Carbine locally, but I’m leaning toward a transferrale M14 or there is a really nice Guide Lamp Grease Gun locally also

The grand, shoots 30 ott 6, those are pretty common. Although a little more kick. But I would love to have a M1 grand.

I loved shooting my grandpas M14 that thing was just so much fun honestly likes it a lot more than an AR but that's just me.

I'm thinking about the stock just for looks alone honestly I've already got a wood stock with a pistol grip and may just leave it but I think it would be cool to give it that extra push to WWll era look.

I've noticed I had been trying local stores only place I found is Haw river gun and pawn but they wanted almost 30$ for a box might try Dicks again .... haha I wrote it laughed .. I'm leaving it ... any way try there and see if they have any yet.

I agree with @WhiteTiger911 that there are guns more fun to shoot than a damned AR. Not that that's gonna keep me from buying another one...simply for parts availability and redundancy. But just one more.

Anybody got an affordable optic for an AR that has a rail but also a fixed front sight? I only know what I read about in G&A. I put a Bushnell TRS-25 ($53) on something else, and it works well so far, but I'm fine with spending more. I'd like a green dot since my eyes seem to wanna give the red dot a twin sometimes. A friends' red dot has the option to switch to green and I was good with that.

Midway, Brownells, and the likes have them, the Promags aren't great, but cheap and functional. The Inland (sic) mags are nice, but double the cost of the promags.

I always keep my peepers open in GunBroker, ArmsList and the likes, you'll find some nice USGI mags for sale on there every so often.

I bought some of the KCI (Korean) 15 and 30 rounders to try out, just haven't had the chance to try gem out yet, but they seem like good quality.

I do the same I think I still have my AR mags cheap army mags work perfect for what I need.

Ive see some surplus stores near army bases that tend to have some of mags most seem to only be 10 and 15 round.

Most my stuff I go with is off armslist or midway though.

Sportamansguide and if they don't have it then they at least always have cool stuff in their catalogs.

Finally pulled out and cleaned off my Grandfathers AR the first time I saw it I wanted to put a new rail on it and now I like the old school look.

Oh yeah from what I understand from my uncle my grandfather and him built this any many more like it from kits at gun shows and would turn around and sell them to fund Baja racing and other things that go bang fun.

Had a guy tell me today how I won't be able to hit 300yds with that old AR and need to upgrade to something else..... lol

We were just switching over from the M16A1 to the M16A2 while I was a cadet and in officer basic. The new A2 was so much more accurate - it took the 300M target from being something that was a challenge (wind was in play) to a point and shoot. Prolly was all mental, but I had instant confidence in the A2. If you look at the given ballistics, I don't think they were that much different - but never seen real analysis.

I wish I could have shot an old A1 just to feel the difference, I Like this old style and shooting with iron sites is just fun I think.

I must not have been that great 300 was a challenge at least hitting all of them lol. When I used an Acog for the first time I felt like I was cheating lol

My XM177 had an A1 upper on it, it was good quality, Colt original.

Older govt uppers has barrels with 1-9 twist, so maybe a little less stable at longer ranges, but should be fine at 300yds. The sights are not as nice as the A2 though

What proof marks are on the upper receiver, barrel, and BCG?

I'll check once I get home tonight cuz I have no idea honestly this is the 2nd time I've taken it out since it was given to me.

Im going to have to look them up I didn't even know the sight changed. Our argument started because he wants one of those sights you can hook up to a computer or something and auto corrects to wind and all that... cool tech but man I feel like that takes out the fun.
