What can y’all tell me about this old heater? It has a 71 stamped on the bottom of it. I’m assuming that’s the year it was made.

Yes probably made in 1971. Not much to them. Fill with fuel, dribble some fuel into the top, light on fire then capillary action will pull fuel out of the tank to run. They do put out good heat, but usually stink more or less depending on the condition of the catalyst wool in there.

And they always put out carbon monoxide. I think I would limit use to an ice fishing hut. I wouldn't risk it in a modern tent as they tend to less drafty.

I recently obtained a vintage Coleman Oven NIB, never opened, with the original price tag of $7.53 price tag still attached.

Do we have any serious collectors on MUD? Not looking to make money but if collectable I would like to see it go to someone who may appreciate it or are they mainstream and I should just open it and bake some cookies?

About what year do toy think it's from? I am a Coleman and lantern collector. I am interested in your oven find.

Merry Christmas Mudders! Here's my newly acquired 4/'53 200A up and running. The dirty pics are from the day I got it and then from today after a clean up, new generator etc.

I was bragging to my neighbor about getting my 'new' '48 or '49 425 stove fired up, telling him how much I liked gas powered Coleman stuff. He looked at me and said 'you wait right here'. He goes into his garage and returns with what you see. He's about 80 years old now, but for many years he was a Pack Train Operator here in the Sierras...and this was from his packer days. Wow! It was definitely used & has some patina, so while it doesn't 'look' perfect, it is a strong runner (thanks to Mike @ Old Coleman Parts).

Nice cleanup and a very cool history behind it. And I don't think I've ever seen that globe before. I didn't know that Pyrex was marketing globes directly under the Corning name. Pretty rare I think.

Not exactly sure how prevalent those Pyrex globes were back in the day, but I do have another 200A from 1971 and it also has the Pyrex globe.

Yeah, the story behind this particular lantern is cool. My packer neighbor is the real deal and a bit of a legend in the Pack Station world in these parts. We went over to his place this am for bit of Xmas cheer and we were looking at some pictures of him packing up a horse from when he was in his 30's...so 40+ years ago. He told me that this lantern has been up/down the Sierras, from Yosemite to Kennedy Meadows. This man has got some stories to tell for sure.

Wow, great thread, just found it....need to read thru here and learn a few things. I have a handful of old lanterns/stoves/cooler I need to post up. Love old Coleman stuff!

When hurricane Harvey hit here this year we lost power, dug out a couple lanterns, pumped them up and they fired right up. Those lanterns hadn't been used since hurricane Ike 9 years ago. Full of old gas and old mantles.

They're the ultimate prepping item. When you're ready to put a wrench to them make sure to pop on over to OldColemanParts.com. You won't find a nicer guy to work with than the owner Mike.

Have fun.

Will do thanks.

Like a kid on Christmas I couldn't stand it and had to go look at my treassures in the garage this morning. Based on what little I've seen here my lanterns date from '57, 62 in orig box, 64, 85, 99, and the oldest "looking" one I can't find a date on. 3 round globes...two labeled Pyrex, one lantern made in Canada. Also a couple different stoves up there.
I'll post up some pics soon.

Fun stuff, can't wait to dig in and get these cleaned up and running.

Sounds great...BUT... We need pictures!

Yes especially the Canadian model. Made in Toronto and typically higher quality.

So just looked again, the oldest “looking” lantern is a 242A identical to the ones shown way back in post #694.
After rubbing with a wet cloth still can’t find a date stamp, where would it be? What is the general year range of the 242A?

46-47-48 ish. There should be a date stamp on the bottom. Month and year. Might be covered under crust. Great lantern. Considered by most to be the best running lantern ever. They made 242, 242A, 242B, 242C (and the ultra rare 242K Kerosene) then replaced it with the 200 in 1950.

Ok thanks....yea the bottom of the tank is pretty crusty, couldn’t make out any characters.

I know this is searchable but what is the A, B, C designation?

I'm not sure on the 242s. Generally just small design changes over the years. So they go in chronological order, No Letter, to A, to B and so on. (The 220's went all the way through letter K, skipping I.) Usually very minor stuff like changing from a brass bottom on the fount to steel, or a ventilator change. Often included a change in the logo/stamping on the side of the fount, different globe markings, a change from tin plating to zinc on the frame.... Pretty much all parts are interchangeable and they all run the same. I only have one B and several C's, both nickel and painted.

No idea about the year but the original price tag of $7.53 is still attached. What info or pictures would help? Im thinking it best I dont open an unopened box, yes?

Yeah just a pic of the box. My newer one is just galvanized steel. The old ones I'm thinking of are Brown I think and more stylized. Very cool.
