*What gear oil you usin?

Being that I plan to change out the gear oil every two years, I'm putting in NAPA Premium Performance 80W-90 out of a 5 gallon bucket.

Note: Because it will get brought up, this is for use when API GL-4 or API GL-5 is specified.

^ For what it's worth (and take that with a grain of salt obviously), I once blew and entire evening reading up on the bobistheoilguy forum (a really informed bunch on all things liquid) about gl4/gl5 rated oils vs. strictly gl4 oils. The general consensus was that the oils with only the gl4 rating were the preferred choice over the combo gl4/gl5 oils.

You can get the dedicated gl4 at Napa in the form of Sta-Lube. Just tossing my .02 in the pot of course.

Caught my rig drinking again this past weekend.....8.5 qts, not too bad. Oh, spun on a 15600-41010 as well. Installed a few 90919-01065 plugs, 19101-45060 dizzy cap & 19102-45150 rotor button.

Oh, the diffs, tranny & t-case gear oil got changed as well. Installed the new 10mm hex drive 90341-18021 plugs, steel 12157-10010 drain plug gaskets for the diffs & tranny, and aluminum 90430-A0003 drain plug gaskets for the t-case.

Used the Toyota OEM torque specs for all those plugs. Goodness, I'm sure I was definitely over tightening them in the past.

A small upgrade on my hood & windshield hooks. Had an extra set of OEM hooks, so I cleaned them up and sent out to be chromed a few weeks ago. Below is what I received in the mail yesterday.....Yes, I know I can purchase aftermarket stainless and chrome units, but I also read where they don't sometimes fit so well. And I don't like the mounting plate looks of the new windshield hooks. Thus, using some good , period correct, OEM pieces, I know they fit just like they are supposed too.

OEM Windshield rest block cushions: 53337-90301

Hood hook cushions are just rubber bumpers #9540K863 from McMaster-Carr and some stainless hardware.

Thanks! One quick follow-up. I'm new to the forum and recently bought a 77 FJ. I've seen some postings with Toyota part numbers but there are no descriptions / images - just links to the part order. Is there a central listing folks are using to determine part numbers?

Hey Rick is that a full size Toyota Oil Filter as opposed to the mini me sized YZZD3 filter? Where did you find it? I prefer the full size oil filter

The smaller YZZD3 units dealerships will install or sell you, are today's default Toyota oil filter for the US market.

The 15600-41010 oil filter is the larger OEM unit that our rigs came with. There are very few places to get these. I purchased mine from Partsouq, but I don't think they have any more. I believe Amayama may still have some for sale. There is a guy selling the 15600-41010 oil filters in the for sale section, but they are not cheap.

Note: Partsouq has the 90915-TD004 units, which are basically the same size as the 41010, for a great price. However, I believe these are manfactured in Thailand and not Japan. Pleanty of reading here on MUD for these units.

When my supply of the 41010 filters run out, I'll install a Baldwin B2.
