The company isn't offering the turbo I want at this point other than Graeme. Nor does anyone want to do a one off. Bulk orders and I am not putting up the money.

The way people (person) are talking here just buy a foundery and make your own then sell it for cheap.......no problem. Oh and offer a lifetime warranties. There is a huge market for them.....[emoji6]

Hypothetical question to all those listening:

Let's say I have $1,000 USD to spend on a turbo for my 1-HDT. How would I best spend my money to make the largest increase in performance and driveability?

If I had a $1000 to burn. I would try one of the Mamba setups. TD05H, 17020 with a 16g or 18g wheel. Comes with all the lines and a balancing sheet, so at least you know its balanced properly.

The reviews for other platforms seem very positive, to the effect the were very surprised to find high quality when they were skeptical as it was coming overseas.

Nobody wants to be the first to try something new since we have all been brainwashed that if it came from overseas, its trash. Thats simply just not true in every case. There is nobody here that can say and backup anything negative (or anything positive for that matter) about some of these readily available options out there (Mamba, sumalaya etc). This forum just simply has not had any experience with them yet.

Would that be considered a pretty good setup for the 12ht? Edit. The reason im asking so many q's is im seriously considering pulling the trigger on a mamba turbo. Possibly the tdo5 one. Any info pls

I simply said I'm surprised there isn't more competition. I don't believe I was complaining.

There is more competition. In Australia, where the aftermarket diesel performance market for the 1H series motor is much larger than the US/Canada and has been around for a lot longer. Just like your TDI, when you have thousands of vehicles to test products on, development becomes faster and cheaper. Since you have only recently been allowed to import the vehicles, no-one there has really put any time or money into research, except Karter, and he's said over and over again, it's not viable for him and he can't get what he wants. Like Tap said, you go and buy a sub 1k turbo and see how it really compares. Or price up getting one of the above options custom built (58020 housing/supra wheel or full FTE core). I'll bet you'll be kicking yourself for not going down the tried and tested path. Fast, cheap or reliable. Pick any two.

So, what... I'm not permitted to be surprised that there's only one "tried and true" path for a 25 year old truck? Perhaps I'm missing the purpose of this thread.

It's not "the made overseas" factor that makes people nervous, it's the eBay quality and "12 months warranty " and "balance sheet" with an unknown seller.

@Rob1983, what alternative is available in Australia that's in the same league as gturbo?

Got to pay to play. You can have reliable, performance and cheap the rub is you can only pick two.

Agreed.

For me, its looking more and more like the options are an oem or mellett based hybrid vs a gturbo, or play lego mix and match with TD05H platform.

I've previously run a 1hd-t /supra hybrid and it was a modest but definite and appreciable upgrade. I think I'd be pleased with the same again, or ct20b/supra, particularly on a 1HZzzzzzzzz that's not turboed :D

Knowing there's a superior upgrade, it's tempting to be greedy for more!

To do this job properly you need an Engineer who understands all the maths and thermodynamics behind a turbocharger. That straight away cuts your options down to probably a few hundred guys (max) worldwide

I don't feel like such a dullard anymore :hillbilly:
Spent countless hours years ago trying to understand compressor maps, calculators and stuff. The more I read, the more there was I didn't understand.

Hats off to anyone who finds a solid understanding of this stuff, particularly if it's just an interest/hobby.

Apples and oranges comparison between the size of the aftermarket industry supporting a 4lt landcruiser engine that's 25yrs old and the TDI brigade. Diesel performance wasn't even a thing when these engines were built.

Gturbo is the best and obvious option because Graeme was the first one to put some real work into providing upgraded turbos for Landcruisers to match or rival the Nissan TD42 scene.

"No-one can afford to do it right but everyone can afford to do it twice"...makes me think twice about some of the seemingly cheaper options out there. I'd use (and have done so) a second hand Supra hybrid before an eBay special.

The Supra hybrid will pound out 15psi and pull like a train with the same sort of spool time as stock. A Gturbo ( I've used one of these too) Will do the same thing but with earlier spooling. It really doesn't make a lot of difference in real world driving because the engine still makes it peak power above 2000rpm. Achieving 20psi at 1600rpm won't turn you Cruiser into a beast.

Then what will?
Achieving 20psi by 1800 rpm and 35psi @ 2300rpm and holding that to 3800rpm. Tune max load @ 17:1 afr and I can guarantee you that you won't be able to get that big cheesy grin off you face.

The only direct replacement alternative would be the ones UFI are developing

I'll be doing that this weekend. Aiming to be the first 1HDT to crack 300rwhp

Nice. Will this be on standard injectors. My FTE was just over 300rwhp and man does it make a cruiser nice to drive.

Be as surprised as you like. Dyno figures don't lie. I got 250rwhp by flogging the Garrett to it's limit. The GTurbo I'm fitting has been proven to make over 350. And like @Locked79 said, 20 psi by 1800 and 35+ by 2300 all the way to redline is very hard to be unhappy about

No, hi flow injectors and pump, even 250 was a lot of fun!

What your saying is exactly my point. You, nor anyone else on this forum that I am aware of, have seen, touched or driven in a truck with the Mamba turbo. Yet you are certain its "ebay quality" junk. The reviews and videos Ive seen contridict your statement.

I am not saying it is a great quality turbo. I have no experience either. I am just saying everyone here seems quick to judge their quality without anything to back it up.
