I have been using Candlepower's HIR 9011 bulb in the low beam position and I like it. A lot. The only problem is that they burn out quick, less than a year and it's done.

So, a couple of quick questions about the bulbs: First off, not sure of the brand, but the HIR 9011 at Candlepower states they are 12.8V 65W, whereas the Phillips version at PEP Boys are 12V 65W. Would the difference of .8 Volts matter?

To complicate things even more, Rock Auto sells a Wagner manufactured HIR 9011 for a mere $8.71. Has anyone used that product and is it any good? The price is almost a third of the Philips and Candlepower versions. I am about to replace one of the burnt lamps and thought I would ask.

I've been looking into HIR bulbs and from what I can gather, the Wagners are manufactured by Phillips.

I liked my HIR's from candlepower but the bulbs seem to be loosing output already after only being in for just over a year. Has anyone put in a higher wattage 9005 bulb in the low beam housing and just changed the connector?

Running the 9011 (high beam) bulbs in low position gives me incredible illumination and clarity in normal driving with a very simple modification. It would be impossible to go back to anything else. I guess the relatively short lifespan of the bulbs can be attributed to the fact mine turn on as running lights whenever the car is started.

So, the difference of .8 Volts between brands is nothing to worry about before I plunge in with Philips or Wagner? And as for brands, I read in another forum that Philips is the only manufacturer of the HIR bulbs and hence at a third of the price, the Wagner is a Philips. That would make sense if Philips is the only company that has license to the technology.

I ordered 9012 Phillips and they come in today. I'm going to swap out my bulbs after work. It's a bit sad how dim and yellow the regular halogens are, hopefully the HIRs are a great improvement. Otherwise I'm going to consider doing a retrofit with some morimoto projectors.

I was driving last night, and in my area the roads are well lit, but the lights still left a lot to be desired.

i just trimmed the tabs on 9011/9012's last night and installed all 4 bulbs, and am installing a slee harness this evening or weekend, depending on what time I get off work...I had bought mine from home depot mail order, they are the Philips "standard" like in the original post...hoping they do the job for me.

You should have installed the 9011 bulbs as low beams. You wouldn't have been disappointed. They are plenty bright. I drive with them in city traffic as well as in remote places in Death Valley and they do a great job. I used 9012s as low beams before, they werean improvement from the OEM configuration, but nothing like the HIR 9011 bulbs.

I haven't installed yet. They were delivered today though. I'll pick up the 9011s and use as low beams next and compare.

Thanks to @LandCruiserPhil for doing the leg work on this. I put 9011 and 9012 in my 92 80 series but this time around I went 9011 both ways. Holy crap! I can see! Awesome!

Add a couple ditch lights and a set of pencil beams and you are ready for the Baja 1000................lighting wise:D

I've got lights sitting on my inti clone rack in my garage. Just need help lifting it up on my 80!

I bought some Philips 9011 bulbs from Amazon and trimmed them down to put into my low beam (9006) slots. When I install them, then twist to lock them, they are loose and want to turn counter clockwise.

I also noticed that the diameter of the circular O-ring is smaller on the 9011 than the stock 9006. (20mm diameter 9011 and 22mm for the 9006).

Has anyone had luck with using Philips 9011 into the low beam slots?

Yes. In both low and high beam. Got the same ones off Amazon recently.

I went with new headlights for my FZJ80, so I have a set of new, upgraded bulbs that I don't need anymore for sale. These are the highly regarded Toshiba 9011/ Philips 3rd Gen P9012 Hi/Lo beam combo from Candlepower. I paid $120 for the 4 bulbs, but all 4 can be yours for $60, shipped. PM me. Slight modification to base of bulb needed for installation. Testing HIR lamps - What I found

Were any modifications made to address the smaller o-ring diameter, or are you just running them as they are? Any concern about moisture getting into the housing? I ordered the 9011s from Amazon as well but have not installed them because of this.

I ended up just installing them and used a pretty nice amount of di-electric grease to "water proof" them. I haven't had any water or moisture getting back there, however I live in a pretty dry climate. The light output is nice that is for sure.
