Thanks for the info. I suspected that long term I might have issues with the pump where I've put it. Short term I will carry a spare pump, but I plan to install a larger tank in the rear with an in-tank pump and eliminate the stock gas tank altogether. This will give me more fuel capacity and keep the pump cooler and at the preferred location.

A friend has that larger rear tank and it is a total hassle. OEM rules in the fuel tank area. If not Cruiser Bros has a large cell for under both seats that is nice

And so where are we at now?

I've put over 3500 miles on it since the install. Much of that has been in Colorado at higher elevation. I'm loving how easily it starts and how well it performs. It runs just as well at 13000 feet as it does at sea level. It is probably the best thing I've done to this old Cruiser. The performance on the road and on the trail are hard to beat. I like it so much I'm considering putting EFI on my 60 rather than jump straight to an engine swap.

Right now the fuel pump is right next to the fuel tank in the cab, it whines and I don't like it there. I'm planning to switch to a rear fuel tank now with an in-tank pump and eliminate the tank from in the cab. I'll either do an S10 tank or Downey's rear tank.

abut4x4, if you do install my rear tank make sure you remount the elec. pump back by the tank, elec. fuel pumps are pushers, not suckers.

Yep, the AFI EFI that I installed on my 1976 was the best thing I have done to it as well. It just starts and runs every time. No hesitation and there is a very slim chance I COULD get a speeding ticket now! Well, if it was a 55MPH zone maybe. A guy can dream.
If I ever did get a speeding ticket in my FJ40 I would frame it and display it with pride!
