Your all terrain tires are better suited for sand than someone’s mudders, so thats a plus. I always start out slow as to not dig, bring a shovel and some 2x6’s or tracks if you have em. Park facing downhill always, air down as much as you can safely.
Have a shovel, don't have tracks, may bring 2x6...

Polarised sunglasses.

I visited dunes on a beach in Australia mid summer, and on a hot sunny day, the glare of the sand near midday was so intense at times it was impossible to see the topography 30ft in front.
Polarised sunglasses helped, but after driving into unexpectedly steep inclines, or off the back of dunes I could barely see a few times I stopped, got out and walked to check what was in front on several occasions before deciding to bail.

Conveyor belts from e Bay make very nice affordable tracks.

I don't think I've ever put mine in 4L on the dunes.

Air down and either in 1st or 2nd I've been able to go pretty much anywhere.

if you get in a big witches eye just fill it in. you probably wont be able to get out. I hate sand when I drive my 80. I have to air down to the low teens...

Oh, one thing about driving. You cant just stop or turn your way out of certain things without being worse off than you already were. Like committing to a hill or bowl. When in doubt, throttle out is a life saver, the throttle is your friend, youll prob need more throttle than you think for most hills, because its soft.

It's fun but just plan to squish your way around. You will hate the low horsepower of the 1fz really quickly as compared to the sand rails zipping around. I would go down to like 8 to 10 psi, frankly.

Don't be afraid to rent some of the 400cc quads and rip around too. Those are a different kind of fun.

^^ This. And use that red line.

yep. sometimes the difference between 16psi and 10psi is like night and day, just take it easy with 10psi.

10 psi on stock wheels or bead lock wheels???
just the toyota alloys. for a trail I have 14-15psi in them, less chance of hitting a rock on the dunes so I run 10psi

Yep, I agree on low air pressures. I've run 7-8psi in my HZJ105 (gutless diesel).

If you're running really low psi, you need to plan, and start your turns about 3mins ahead of time.
They steer like an ocean liner at low psi

Success! I found that most of the time LOW was the call, however I played around in H. I ran my tires at 15psi, pulled out someone who was stuck climbed some of the smaller dunes and went down much larger ones. Thanks!

You went out at a great time to experience the dunes! The sand being wet gives a much more solid base than normal, that is the best time to go out, sometimes it's like driving on concrete after a big storm and you don't even need to air down. Just a heads up, next time you go the sand may act very differently.
