For those of you who might want to see how the swap started you can check out this thread:https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/673353-cummins-4bt-into-97-lc.html

I am now going to be using an Isuzu 4bd1t that came out of a 1990 NPR.

Here is a little back story to how and why the change occurred. After I bought the 4bt, I found out that the 4bd1t was also a popular option for diesel swaps. So I started looking for a 4bd1t and in almost no time I found a 1990 NPR that was about 4hrs away round trip for $1000.00. It hadn't been started for about a year and the radiator and been seriously damaged by someone using a skid steer to move it. Anyway with a little battery tinkering we got it to start, then pumped most of the ATF fluid onto the ground (apparently at the same time the radiator was damaged they f####p a transmission hose). It didn't run long enough to actually drive it onto the trailer as planned so we had to push it on with the same skid steer that was the culprit in the aforementioned damage. A couple of hours later and back home we figured out why it stopped running, ran out of fuel because there was an open fuel line that was sucking in air. It had another diesel on the back that ran a street sweeper and they shared the same fuel tank and it was that fuel line that sucked in the air. We got it primed back up and after that she would start up no problem.

So I had the drive train from the NPR sitting in my shop and I had the drive train from the LC sitting there and I happened to read the following thread and it got me to thinking.https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tec...suzu-4bd1t-swap-part-ii-now-w-a440f-auto.html So lets see if we can accomplish something similar with a newer 80 series and a different transmission.

In the first picture I have the Isuzu bell housing bolted up to the A343F Toyota transmission via a piece of plywood that is acting as the temporary adaptor. The second picture shows the two torque converters with the Isuzu on the left. They are very similar in size, but I think I am going to need to use the Toyota and attach it to the flex plate mounting ring that is currently on the Isuzu. I will post up more info and pics tomorrow.

Watching as well, doing the same swap but using a A440 out of a 92 FJ80. What are you doing to control the trans?

I am planning on using the set up from Compushift https://www.hgmelectronics.com/display/hgm/COMPUSHIFT+II, but I have yet to verify that it will work. I have talked with Mike there a couple of times and e-mailed him pictures of the connections on the transmission, he thinks it should work, but he wanted to research the A343F a bit. I need to call him and see what he found out.

Today I got everything bolted up so I could check how much space I have between the Toyota torque converter and the Isuzu flex plate. I have about 1.125" that I will need to make up for on the back side of the converter. I am going to work on the torque converter over the weekend, but I think it would be best to get the Isuzu bell housing to A343 adapter done before taking final dimensions for the torque converter.

Cant wait to dig into mine, I'm scouring CL now for a 4BD1T. I'm going to use a Allmares adapter though. I'm going to rebuild my A440 with extra clutches and a reworked VB will be interesting to see how our two swaps come along. Mine is still a year or more away though. :frown:

I apologize to anyone who was watching this thread, I have neglected it, but I will now start getting everyone back up to speed. The main event that has changed the direction of the thread is; I decided to buy the Isuzu 4bd1t adapter from Allmaras Machine, but I don't know if it is going to continue to be available. I am quite sure the other route could be made to work and for anyone who wants to try it I will be happy to share my thoughts on it.

Did you ever find out anything about a controller for the a343f? Are you changing the stall speed of the torque converter?

I sent the converter to Roadrunner Converters in Phoenix. They changed the stall speed and changed the output shaft to the transmission which had a very tiny crack coming off of one of the notches. I can't remember the exact cost, but I think with shipping both ways the total was in the area of $250-275.00.

I am not planning on dealing with the transmission until after I have it running. I want to see what happens with shifting it manually.

At some point along the way this build/swap turned a bit towards a restoration project. About the only thing I haven't done is take the body off of the frame and I haven't done anything with the interior. Maybe the best term for what I am doing is preventative restoration. It is one of those things where "well since I am doing this I might as well do this too while I am at it".

It was sometimes awkward and difficult to get to every part of the axle while it was in the blast cabinet. So, some of the prep work was done with a grinder and wire wheel.

I used Bill Hirsch chassis paint which is similar to POR15 but a little bit cheaper.

Shipwrights disease. We all suffer from this to some extent.

Good work!

Thanks. Sometimes the hardest part is deciding when and where to stop.

Here are a few pics of the engine. I have enough stuff torn down around here so I decided not to get into the engine any more than I needed to to get it cleaned up. It seemed to be running fine before I removed it from the NPR. I did reseal a couple of things including the rear main seal.

I like the double valve cover, thought I was experiencing some sort of short term Deja vu.

Im suffering from the Shipwrite syndrome now lol. "While im there" is continually going through my head.

It is a sickness. I just haven't figured out if it's good or bad. The answer probably depends on your perspective. If you are done looking back it is good. If you are somewhere in the middle of it, well that is another matter and not so easy to answer.

Yeah, I'm at that middle stage myself lol. I know once done I will be very happy I did it all. Its just a bit overwhelming some times.

Nah, you guys are doing great!

When you go out in the middle of nowhere it is easy to make those decisions as you go along. "Well, is this something that may fail if I don't take care of it while I'm in here" is the question I keep answering to myself. Yes, it takes more time, but then you don't have that nagging feeling out in the middle of nowhere about "what is going to fail next syndrome". I'd rather have the Shipwrights if you ask me.

Have fun!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. As you can see this originally started out as a swap based on your basic idea, but with different model years and different transmissions. I definitely think your basic idea could be applied to my swap, but I figured after i paid for materials and the local machine shop costs for turning the adapter, I wouldn't be to far away from the cost of the adapter that I bought from Allmaras Machine. Anyway, thanks for paving the way on the original concept.
