Swapping in a 700R behind my small block (1 Viewer)

My brother came over to see the clip jammed in there, so I grabbed the shaft and shook it to show it wouldn't come out... yup... it slid right out

Here's a few more pictures of the progress. We got the case cleaned up and painted (we decided the color is "10% more efficient gray"). My parts arrived at my parents for the doubler kit so now on to assembly!

Good thing we had the towel on the table when we set the tranny back down... appearently some fluid was hiding in the valve body

My roommate left yesterday untill tuesday... so the tranny has encroached upon the whole apartment!

Here's the little clip that was holding me up for so long... for scale...

glad everything is working out for you. Iwas starting to worry about that tranny being alright. well if it ever warms up I'll be pulling that motor and staring my swap.

good luck

Got the kit from AA and it looks like everything will go together rather smooth.

Here's the hardest thing to tackle so far...

How do I bust this nut? Loose that is... but seriously... any advice? I straightened the tab. We had a 4 foot cheater bar across the rear output (and it was in low range) And we had the high lift handle on the breaker bar on the nut... nothin

I would say impact wrench and lots of air.....

If that is not an option then you can always cut it off....die grinder...dremel whatever you can get in there

Impact wrench walked that nut right off. Does anyone have the bearing numbers for either of the bearings on the NP203. I need the input one as well as the "main shaft pilot bearing" the bearings I have don't have numbers.

Chris

I don't think I have the paperwork anymore but I will look and if that fails I will send a PM to someone who might know....I know they aren't cheap :frown:

More progress. I got the auto rebuilt and the NP203 rebuilt last week and came home this weekend to take apart the split case and get it all put together. Here's some more pictures, not a whole lot of tech stuff but the adapter is really simple.

Here's the NP203 -> adapter plate -> then the front section of the split case
Adaptertot-case.jpg

Here's the adapter plate before I put the split case on
Adapterplate.jpg

NP203 ->adapter plate -> split case... This part is going really smooth as well. It's amazing how much better things seem to go when you remove all time constraints

Two strange things going on:
1. I assume this is an oil slinger? anyway it was damaged where it was close to the gear... I looked like it was bent in too close to the teeth. Anyway I bent it back away and left it alone. No damage on any of the teeth and the bearings and seals are not KOYO so I assume this case has been rebuilt.
OilSlinger.jpg

The other trouble was the bearing that sits in the adapter plate (see the second picture) had a snap ring with it. With the snap ring installed, the split case wouldn't fit up tight because the goove in the case was too small.
thisgroove.jpg

I just remove the snap ring and assembled it. I can't figure out why the snap ring needed to be in there. On one side of the bearing it runs against a flange on the shaft and the other side rides against the bushing which rides against the gear et et et to the nut on the end of the shaft in the t-case (the 36mm nut I had trouble getting off...)

More to come. I hope to get the tranny installed in measure for driveshafts and shifters tomarrow. Then weld up the inner frame rails and fab up the cross member.

Chris

Chris,

Looks really nice.....look at my thread for shifter ideas if you don't already have any...lots of good stuff...I am rebuilding my set up again...

Dang, just looked at that thread. Glad to hear you got to drive it. The shifters look pretty straight forward. Let me know what you come up with.

If someone gets a chance and can take a picture of the front d-shaft as it passes the tranny that'd be good... I've read that clearance could be an issue on SUA. I'd love an excuse to SOA...

That shaft looks really close to the oil pan on the tranny... am I gonna have trouble SUA?

And what did you use as the tranny mount?

Chris

Chris,

I would think you might have a problem with the smaller lift...I will look at it closer in the morning and re-evaluate my thoughts....It sure does look close in that pic...maybe you need the SOA to go with all the work you are doing:) :)

spring over in spring Chris....come on...everyone is doing it ;)

I would have if you'd held on to those tires! haha. I can't afford tires, I can swing the rest of it. The other problem is I'd have to quit wheelin like a :princess:... or worse, I'd be out of excuses not to wheel...

uh, tech content... here's everything waiting for me to get going this morning.

SOA... what have you heard? ;) That won't happen till I find some steel under the frame.... ugh..

Cutting out the inner part of the frame from the B-pillar back and scabbing in some steel... Here's the prep work

Then you gotta love good help.
AJ: How's this gonna get cut off
Me: Sawzall...
AJ: What's that?
Me: You mean you've never used one? :D Here ya go... it's basically the opposite of duct tape... have fun!

Sucka!

ohh did i say SOA? thats not what i meant. Oh BTW your frame looks like s**t. If you need help this weekend gimme a call.

Brian

in that third pic it looks like someone already tried to do a little frame patching.
