This 2.5" tall self-powered Cerwin Vega 10" sub fits in both the factory sub location (behind the panel) as well as under the driver's seat if you want (very tight fit made easier by ~1/2" of spacers for the rear two seat bolts). For just $175 it gives you more than enough bass to make your wife/GF complain ... had it in mine before upping my bass game with 2-12s to ensure full GF whinage.

That sounds familiar.

This is what I did. Post #2 shows the Cerwin-Vega sub.

Thought I'd add my experience adding bass to my FJ80. The goal was to keep the truck as close to stock as possible. My inspiration was a post, "Rear hidden subwoofer box" on the Ih8mud forum where Ringwraith (author) gave the dimensions of a box he made. I was able to find an enclosure with similar depth and went that route.

Retro Manufacturing 8" enclosure
Dimensions: 15x12x3 inches with an internal sealed volume of .312 cubic feet. I got mine from the clearance bin for $70. The enclosure is also designed with recessed mounting for a shallow mount 8" subwoofers, so the driver is flush with the enclosure

Subwoofer - Rockford Fosgate P3SD2-8
This is a shallow mount 8" sub wit a sealed box volume requirement of .20-.70 cubic feet. this is perfect for the enclosure selected above. Almost all subs this size have a similar spec and there are tons of shallow mount 8" subs out there you can choose from. I was able to find an open box for $130. Below is a link for the sub on Crutchfield since they provide good details.

In the pic below, you can see the enclosure and 8" sub next to the factory bracket with my old Pyle 6.5" free-air sub

The factory bracket was hacked a good bit so that it could be reused to anchor the sub box. The box is quite snug and isn't going anywhere, but since I wheel a good bit, some anchoring is probably wise.

I choose to install sound deadening material since it looks like a fun project that may help with sound and eliminate vibrations from the sub. Also, the panel had already been pulled off, so why not?. I went with Amazon Basics and 1 sheet of 18" X 32" was all that was needed. For this project, the stock sound deadening material was left in place and new sound deadening was installed around it.

Unfortunately, the sub enclosure encroaches on the factory cubby by about 1/4". To be able to install the panel, the cubby was heated with a heat gun so I could bend (melt?) it back just a smidge to fit in place. It looks ugly on the outside, but really has no impact on the storage and it gets covered anyway. I was tempted to leave this part out of my post to avoid admitting the hackery, but thought again.

Note: For the panel to go back on, there is one fastener that won't push in since the sub enclosure is in the way.

It is a tremendous improvement in sound and I'm really pleased with it. No, it won't wake the neighbors, but that wasn't my goal anyway. The sound from a 8" sealed sub is tons better than any free-air option.

Not sure anyone cares about the rest of the system, but here it is anyway (reminder, the goal was improved sound with sock appearance)
Amp - Alpine MRV-F300 - This is a 4 channel amp at 50w/channel (4 Ohm). The great thing about this amp is that it easily fits under the driver's seat with no trimming of anything needed. I have 2 channels being used for the front speakers at 50wchannel (4 Ohm) and the other 2 channels bridged for the sub at 150w (4 Ohm). This matches the specs for the sub and speakers nicely.
Front Speakers - Pioneer 6.5" shallow mount
Rear Speakers - Pioneer 4"

Hope someone out there finds this useful/helpful...Happy wheelin'
