What do your plugs look like? Have you pulled them and taken a looksie?

I don't think it is the pump; it squirts real nice.
Here are some pics of some plugs

Your plugs look like you are running rich rather than lean...I know you stated you put in a Pertronix, but didn't mention the coil...Have you tested it? If you are getting weak spark, you might actually be flooding the carb, and that is what is causing the hesitation.

Someone with a lot more experience will probably tell me I'm full of sh!t, and backfire should be coming out the tailpipe for this condition...but you have looked at other conditions...why not this?

I would think that a rich situation would run worse when the choke is pulled halfway out.
It was running rich before I did all the things shown in the first post. It got 7 MPG and the exhaust smelled rich.

Now it gets 11-12MPG and the exhaust doesn't smell as bad.

I tested the Flamethrower coil at the + and - terminals and it read 1.7ohm.
I tested it at the + terminal and at the point where the high tension wire connects and the multimeter didn't do anything.

Perhaps the dark plugs are from the previous rich condition, and just hasn't burned off? Don't know what the coil is suppose to ohm out at, but if it's new, I doubt you would have problems with it.

Have you adjusted your valves lately?

Pretty easy and straight forward process. I did it this last weekend for the first time...Info in FAQ...If your valves aren't adjusted, your vacuum could be suffering. A lot of posts are pointing to bad vacuum.

From the sounds of it it looks like you may need a carb swap. I'll get one together and get it out to you asap. Sorry about the issues. I hope the carb is the problem.

The rings on the venturi look a bit bent and busted up compared to the original carb.

It's not. That is the way they all look. It's a reproduction not the real deal.

Thanks Trollhole, you're a great business man. I treat my customers the same way.

The mechanic I used thought it was the carb but I couldn't find any evidence on IH8MUD that any of your carbs had ever been bad so I questioned it.

He was unable to find any intake leaks or other reasons to make it run like it does.

I tried spraying carb cleaner as well as using propane around the carb, intake, and hoses with no results.

I'm fairly certain it is a vac advance dizzy. The plate turns counterclockwise towards the vacuum port.

I've sold 300 carbs so far. I have had a handfull of issues. I'm not perfect. But I am willing to do whatever I can to make it right if you do have a problem.

On another note take a pic of your dizzy and post it up. Also do me a favor and unhook the vac from the carb and cap it off and report back how it runs.

I capped the vac port and it idled the same (up and down and finally shutting off).
I didn't take it for a drive.

Whatever the problem is, it seems to be degrading over time. The truck idled
fine but wouldn't accelerate good when I got it back from the mechanic.
Now it won't idle without the choke pulled a little bit out.
It idles smoother (albeit higher) up until the choke is about 3/4 pulled out and then it runs rough again when the choke is pulled all the way out.
It seems that every day that goes by, more choke is needed to get it to run smoother.

The new carb is in and runs. The secondary venturi is dumping fuel at idle(beyond dripping, close to a steady stream). Are there some adjustments that can take care of this?

running

how's it running overall other than the prob you state above ---did it quit hunting and dying on you?

It ran fine for about 2 months, then it suddenly decided to stop idling. I started it today to try to figure out the problem. I took off the air cleaner to look inside and saw the gas pouring into the second barrel. There is also black smoke coming out of the tailpipe and there is no fuel in the sight glass.
This thing is driving me crazy as this is the second TrollHole carb I've put on it and with each I've had different problems. This is my first FJ I've owned and it gives me the impression that they never run right. I thought I would keep it for a long time but if this is the way it is, then I'm thinking of getting rid of it.
