Hey guys,
Our 1976 Fj40 has gotten us down to Oaxaca, Mexico. After a $15 carb rebuild in the parking lot of a mercado due to some awful fuel quality "Emma" died on the way to a proper mechanic. The Green angels (the mexican equivalent to free triple A) helped us diagnose the the problem as a lack of spark and got her sputtering again. We limped into Oaxaca's terrifying road system and finally found a place to let the old girl rest. So here we are.
Does anyone know the part numbers Marshall uses for his 2f small cap dizzy rotor and cap? Is the cap the same as the small cap dizzy? I had a spare rotor I pulled out of my old dizzy but it looks different.

On the rotor it says 9034... not really sure what this number is for. Any thoughts? I can hitch a ride to autozone, so things are looking up.

Take the cap and rotor with you for comparing. I have come up with at least two different caps and rotors. Not sure about my Trollhole model. I'm watching if anyone comes up with the part numbers. Have another taco, someone will know. Have you PM'd Marshall yet?

You are probably aware from just looking around that no Toyotas were sold in Mexico until about 10 years ago, so finding a part for a 40 year old cruiser may be difficult. It is probably easier for you to just get parts shipped from the US.

The cap and rotor are usually easy to clean enough to be servicable, also the points unless they are trashed. A set of points, if a point dizzy, should be in everyone's tool box. Good luck.

I emailed Marshall, but I'll try PMing him. The lack of toyota's does seem a bit alarming. I'll try the taco approach.
Thanks

Hey Marshall,
Thanks for writing back.
I have a red cap dizzy. I'll attach a photo of the rotor that came with my Dizzy and the autozone link for a 77. Can you confirm that it will work for my dizzy. Mine seems to have more going on than the 77. Also, I told the guy at the part store that the cap was from a 74' (it looked the closest in the pictures). Will that work?
Thanks for the follow up.

Tough to tell from that one photo, but I have a hard time believing that your problem is due to that rotor (unless there is some major damage that I'm not seeing).

That is an odd rotor, though. What's with the deal on the left side and with what looks like a spring mechanism on the right side?

I don't know about the spring deal, it came with that rotor when i got the dizzy. It looked a lot worse before I cleaned it. I'll piece it back together mañana and try to buy a new/spare rotor and cap. I'll let you know how she fares.

I don't understand why you think that the rotor or cap is the problem. They don't usually fail and when they do, it is usually obvious.

The rotor and cap replacement was advised by our roadside mechanic. The cap and rotor did have a lot of dust and black (burnish) stuff in it. I cleaned it and changed the spark plugs. We got her sparking properly. I'd still like to buy spares, so the next time she acts up in the middle of nowhere I can slap a new one in. She's still running really rough due to the on-the-go carb cleaning. I have a gasket kit on the way. I'll keep you all up to date. Thanks for the responses.

Mexico has a lot really talented mechanics that can repair nearly anything and they work for cheap, so get a new mechanic.

You said something about "awful" fuel quality--I would hazard a guess this may be contributing to the problems you are having-what did the truck do? just die like it was running out of gas?----fuel filter/carb float filter/fuel pump?(this seems to be the only thing that has changed in the operation of the truck.)
Electrical probs typically will kill everything immediately--and like Pin_Head says if the rotor/cap is at fault, you will see it fast.(cracks/tracking, etc.)

Yep.

^^^ This.

Then maybe that rotor is part of the problem. It has to have a spring-loaded contact inside, which may be pitted/burned/dirty. I'd toss it away and install a Toyota rotor (if it fits the Chinese dizzy).

That looks like a governor rotor, have never seen one on a Toyota, only old VW's.

It is. Cuts out at 4500 Rpms.

Coil?

They're like $18.

That was my #1 ignition problem with the piggy...
