Tack the gap of the circlip together is the easy solution, can die grind it or small disc grind it off later if you ever need to.

Drilling and tapping is a bit trickier, needing to sharpen a masonry bit to be able to drill the hardened shaft.

Awesome cheers mate, the original circlip was fused to the shaft with rust and snapped off rather than spread

Then I stripped the tread on a puller trying to get the brake assembly off, heated, pulled, hammered. Nothing worked. This winch hasn't been loved for a long time ImageUploadedByTapatalk1373193192.836402.webp
In the end I had to tack a bar to the shaft, put the winch in a vice and hit it with a sledge hammer. Worked :) except I spent the next half hour looking for ball bearings :)
And this is what I was left with.

There was a lot of water mixed with the oil. I have a lot of cleaning up to do

I really want to see the DIY brake retainer.
Is it simply just a bent washer and a tapped shaft with bolt?
 
Ive got two 8274's somewhere in my garage, both probably need motors and seals etc.

If anyone is keen to do one of these super rebuilds on an 8274 I would be happy to send them both and pay for a motor if they returned one rebuilt with new seals, motor and powder coating. I should note that Im in Calgary Alberta and shipping to the lower 48 and back would probably be cost prohibitive.

One day my hilux will be ready for a winch, an 8274 should be big enough for it.
 
A simple split collar machined to lock into the snap ring groove, as well as clamp onto the entire exposed surface of the shaft.
