I was farting around looking at threads and found that the 1990-1995 4runner 4cyl. autos came stock with 4:88 gears. Is this correct? If it is I might have to go to the junk yard pull the third and put it in my truck.

Then if this is correct the front will not work on a solid front correct? I will have to regear the front to match the rear. Another rear wouldnt fit in the front? or are they spinning the wrong direction?

This could be a great day if I could easily swap out stock 4:88 gears and not have to pay to get the gears done.

4 cyl auto should have come with 4.38 gears the only toyota with factory 4.88 is the 6cyl pre-runners

Bzzztt. Nice try, but not quite.

2nd gen (90-95) 4Runners with the automatic, V6, AND the larger tire package have 4.88s.

BUT.

There is no locker made for that diff, it's an odd carrier. And only factory OEM ($$$) gear fit it.

[edit: this is not correct info. See post #9 and 12 below. Sorry.]

Sounds like it is not worth it. Back to shopping for aftermarket gears and learning how to set them up.

I got all excited but of course some thing that would be that easy and cheap would not work.

I was reading on it and I dont think they do fit. I know aussie locker doesnt make one for it maybe tru-trac or whatever it is might make one.

Maybe you can make it work I dont know how different they are.

IIRC nothing fits, even the case is unique to this unit. If I had one, would have no problem running it (install a Lincoln locker :hillbilly:), but when it has a problem, your better off junking it and starting over with a more standard chunk. The gears, etc are only available from Toyota $$$$$$$$$!

I am running stock 4.88 gears with a Detroit Soft locker in the rear.

Yeah I'm running a lockrite in my oem 4.88's.

The Toyota 4.88 gear carrier is THE SAME as other 4 pinion v6 carriers. There is just somthing about the 4.88 gear CASE that makes it unable to be re-geared. Any carrier replacement locker, detroit or arb will work just fine. Of course the 3rd members will also work without a hitch in the front soild axle housing.

Also the 4.88 gears didn't show up until '92 in v6 auto's with 31" tires. The gear code on the door jam will read G144. I got my set (rear and ifs) for a mear $200. Way nice for a drop in OEM solution for 4.88 gears. :D

got them front and rear were cheaper than regearing the rear alone and I do have a lockrite in the rear.

In Australia, the first gen Hilux with a Diesel Engine(1L) came with 4.875:1 Diffs.
You could tell your Toyota Dealer you have a 1981 LN46. - I believe these were even available in America. :hhmm:

I did a little more reading on this, and it appears that it is the pinion offset in the case that is different, so the ring gear is thinner. This explains why the only gears that fit that setup is the OEM ones. So my first post above is incorrect, sorry.

It's a cheap way to get 4.88's if you find the right deal, just DON'T BREAK THEM!

So all I need is to find a truck with the G144 code under the hood pull them put some lockers in there and slap them in?

Cant wait I am on the search for that lucky rig that gets to give me its third members. Might have some 4 cyl. 4:11 diffs with aussie lockers in them for sale shortly.

As a general guide a v6 auto truck/4runner (4Runner for sure to my knowledge) will have 4:88's but it's still good to check the code under the hood before you purchase the diffs to be absolutely sure. And no rear will not fit the front if you have IFS.

I dont have IFS I have a 84 with the stock solid axle.

I would need two rears you cant take the IFS front out and put it in the solid front?

right.

IFS is 2WD (non turbo/ V6) 7.5" Ring gear rear end

...

Thanks I am on the hunt now jsut got my $500 tax return and that seems like a good thing to spend it on.
