HI everyone, I precovid went to iceland and drove a prado 150 for 2 weeks. I fell love with the truck and just recently purchased a 2018 gx460 w/ 18 inch factory wheels. I love the wheels and would like to put larger tires on them. But its hard to find very many factory wheel tire combos in the search with lift. I'm thinking about a dobinson 2" lift. Do you have any other suggestions for a lift and I really want to know what tire size I should go with when keeping factory wheels and lifting 2". Any help would be apprecitated. Thanks

I ran mine like this for a few months before I went to 285's on aftermarket wheels and bumped the lift another .5-75". This is a Ironman FCP lift set to 2" with 255/70/18's (32.1x10x18) on the factory wheels with NO wheel spacers.

Wow, I really like that look, I went through your entire thread a couple of months back and I think thats where I got the idea for the lift with the stock wheels. did you have any issues with tire rub and how did it drive and handle?

No rubbing, it handled great, probably the best the truck rode including when it was stock. I should have stopped right there lol.

Haha no, I'm glad you kept going that thing is a beast! Did a spare that size fit under the truck. Also, would you have gone any taller? If you kept that configuration?

Yes the full size spare fit, but that would be the maximum tire size you can squeeze in there. I don't think the bump from 2" is needed with that size rubber and setup. I really didn't need the extra 1/2-3/4" bump I gave it with the 285's but I just couldn't help myself and it was purely for aesthetics and stance.

I like that setup too, this is pretty much what I am thinking of doing, although I am in the early stages of my research. But I REALLY want to keep the spare underneath. And in general mine will be a moderate build, I have been down this road before (so to speak) and I am focusing on utility and versatility between DD and overlanding.

Just something to think about, compare tire prices between 18" size tires and the same O.D. in a 17". For some, going to a 17" offers a softer ride because of the taller side wall and generally 17" tires are considerably cheaper than the same (outside) diameter of their 18" cousins. In some cases, it's more cost effective to purchase new 17" wheels and tires than getting 18" tires over the time of replacing several sets of tires during the life of your vehicle. But if you don't keep your cars that long, it doesn't really matter.
But like I said, something to research and ponder. :meh:

Worth considering, for sure. 17s would be better off road. I'll have to make that call before I get AT tires.

17" 4Runner, FJ, and Tacoma wheels can usually be found on Facebook Marketplace pretty cheap, if you want 17s to hold you over and have stock fitment.

Good idea - I was just looking at new wheels last night, and a set of 5 would be a grand or more...ouch.

Hey, did you lift the front just 2" or a bit higher to "level"?

In that pic it was 2” up front. I’ve since bumped it another 1/2-3/4” for larger/wider tires.

Creektrails - Oddly, an Icelantic rental Prado was the start of my journey down this path (after a 100 series)....

Like Tex68's original setup, I upgraded to 255/70R18 on stock wheels (GY Duratracs) and have been happy with that balance for snow in winter and trails in the summer... I haven't been able to put the spare back under the truck. I'm tempted by 17inch wheels but would rather put the money elsewhere.

I went Radflo 2.5 adjustable coilover suspension and have been happy with the ride. I selected this to find a balance for the terrain I drive and avoiding need for UCAs.

Wow, nice looking rig. What amazed me most in Iceland was how we drove for hours and hours down pothole strewn f roads, forded rivers and put a beating on the rental land cruiser knowing that many before us had done the same thing and it drove so smooth without parts falling off. It served us for two weeks quite well.
Thanks for the pics. I think that tire size is what I'll probably get. What are you doing with the spare if you can't get it under the truck? Tex said that his squeezed in if I'm not mistaken.

For now, I have the spare inside (3rd row removed) and use the 3rd row driver (former) seatbelt mount position as one securing point... I have put it on the roof rack when I needed the storage space inside.

Like others, I'm considering three buckets of options - steel bumper mount (expedition one, victory 4x4, LFD, etc), gate mount (JW Offroad) and hitch mount (RigD, Wilco, etc). I haven't landed on a decision to balance cost, weight and function...

The other cosmetic tweek for fun, was some global trim replacements for rear of truck (remind me of f-road & Kakadu NP travels)

That picture is epic. 👊 But has me major confused lol. Is that Kakadu? The Prado has washington plates. Whaaaa?

I like the prado fording picture from Iceland.

To clear the confusion, this is my Washington licensed GX (in Oregon) with license plate surround from ebay Japan and swap of "L" to "T".... I don't have the patience for the full prado swap that a few folks have pursued, but I made this minor cosmetic tweak for fun. Most people don't notice (fine) - some Toyota LC folks get a laugh...

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2" Dobinsons Lift myself. I was under the impression that a 275/65/18 would also fit on the stock wheels and clear everything... can anyone confirm?

Any of you guys running Dobinsons or Total Chaos UCAs and care to comment on ride?

Like others here, I dont think I need the extra 0.5" lift or the move to 33" tires for my purposes (currently) and while I hear you can fit 33" tires on a 2" lift, its likely way more comfortable staying with 32s.
