Alright John
You know where I work. I close up shop at 12:30 tomorrow. I don't have a lot of time, I'm getting my junk ready for my trip next week, but if you want to be here by 12:30, I will drive around with you and see what I think of your vibration.
I am by no means any kind of expert, but I will tell you if I think you are being to sensitive or if you really have an issue.

Thakns Alvin. I'd like you to drive my LX. It's in Phx though until late Saturday getting a new o-ring put into the front ARB.

What other times ya got?

well, you see, that's just the thing. pictures never do any trail justice. things tend to flatten out -- you lose a lot in the way of perspective.

I hadn't said it before, but I wasn't terribly impressed with the pics you posted earlier, but I'm sure in actuality, it was probably pretty hairy. sure, I could show you pics, but then we'd simply get into a pissing match of "well, that doesn't look that tough..."

and honestly, I know it's not going result in anything constructive.

So...I'll end with this -- any time you want to run the Rubicon with us, just let me know. Bring your 80, your 100, your scooter...your...whatever...

oh...and don't forget to bring your photographer to document your carnage.

run the trail, then give your opinion.

Not about a pissing match. I am VERY curious if one encounters an obstacle as bad as this Three Feathers one on the Rubicon? 80s run the Rubi all the time yet always pass on this Three Feather line. That's what peaks my curiosity. You were there with Amando. Any pics of insane lines that risk rollover and have ledges two 35-inch tires tall? I would be VERY surprised if there is a must-do line as severe as this on the Rubicon. If there is I'd like to see it. That's all. Oh...Web Wheelers don't run lines like the Three Feathers one. :D

Any other time you would need to come out east to mi casa. Sunday might work, or monday around 5pm. Sunday I should be home, for the most part, all day getting my camping chit together and last minute stuff on my rig.

I've got to unsubscribe from this thread - can't keep up with the volume of email notifications anymore

Good luck y'all :flipoff2:

You subscribed to a Shotts 80/100 whining thread? :whoops: I thought you were sharper than that!:D At least sharp enough not to admit it! :bounce: :bounce:

Do you think it's worth the $$$$ to take the truck to the drive shaft shop for eval? They say they work on vibes. ???

Yes. You can't sell a vibrating rig. I think I've said this before: having a contact at a local driveline shop is invaluable. Make sure they have the top of the line balancing equipment. Find one that has experience with lifted applications.

I have gone through huge problems with vibrations on another rig, and at the end of the day I changed driveline shops and the thing was smooth as silk for $80 and a couple hours of my time.

I don't want to lump into the tone of this thread, so keep that in mind when I say this: if you have not had your setup looked at by an expert in a good driveline shop I don't think there is a realistic view of what is wrong.

I know a lot about how driveshafts work, can accurately measure angles, have been through this a million times, but what I cannot do is put a driveshaft on an expensive machine and give it an assessment. Nor can anybody on the web.

Nay

Never said such a thing. The desire to build another 100 isn't because driveline issues don't occur. It's because I prefer the vehicle.

Well, then I don't understand what your subjective taste in terms of the 80 to 100 has to do with your driveline issue (the putative subject of this thread).

So, that being said, yes, I think it's worth it to get the driveline shop to look at it. The first and easiest thing to do, however, would be to just eyeball the driveshat and see if the ujoints are in phase (even if it was off a little, at least you could scratch off the possibility that it's 90* out-of-phase).

What you do from that point forward is totally up to you and has nothing to do with tech, unless you have more specific questions.

Good luck.

okay then...I'll wade in and piss with you for a while...
These 80s that you mention - the ones that pass on this mythically insane obstacle at Three Feathers -- have these drivers driven their 80s on the Rubicon? If so, maybe you should ask them which is tougher. I've never seen your obstacle in person, so I really can't speak to it.

The Rubicon trail is long. There are many different types of obstacles -- make a mistake on one and the worst you can expect are some scrapes on the body...make a mistake on another part of the trail and you will find yourself tumbling off a cliff. A must-do line? The descent on Big Sluice is all must do...there are no bypasses...the climb up Cadillac Hill is all must do -- there are no bypasses -- it's all must do. Given what I saw there last month, both these sections are getting hairier and hairier every year.

Pictures...you keep talking about pictures. On this last trip, I had my digital camera with an empty card, capable of holding over 500 pics. I took a grand total of 16. I don't think I had a single pic of my rig. Honestly, John, I was too busy concentrating on the trail and driving to stop and pose for pictures or have someone else do the same. I've found that I take fewer and fewer pics these days. Had I known that I would need to prove something to you, I might've snapped a few more.

All that said...this is all pointless...it's been established that you're a web wheeler. Admit it. Accept it. Embrace it.

John, you mean like this stock FJCruiser did?

John, you mean like this stock FJCruiser did?

3Feathers has about 5-6 lines you can take to get to the top. The easiest line has an 20" ledge while making a right turn and spinning rear tires in loose dirt. Most folks take that line. I prefer the one to the right of it, a nasty V notch with ledges and a 45* up angle. I hit that one all day long. The line John is refering to is the far left. I had been holding off on that one until I got bigger tires (I feel more comfortable with a little more clearance on that one), so the next time I go I'll own that b&%$#. I don't mean to bust on ya John, but I don't think it's as nasty as you make it out to be IMO.

Yes.....I agree. I think the shop that rebuilt my rear shaft also tracks vibes. It'll be good investrment. Thank you!

My thought has nothing to do with that (driveline issue). If I keep spending money on the 80 when I really want another 100 then I'm wasting my money.

I was hoping for some pics. That's all Doug. No biggie.

Alvin, yeah, I know as I lived in Tucson every summer from 1990-1994. I've run most of the trails out Reddington Rd/Pass and Chiva Falls was always a favorite. I'm just busting on John too since this was supposed to be a tech thread  That area has some nasty spots and Three Feathers is a nasty pitch but that's it. Now cleaning it on a mtb is a challenge!

I can't believe how many posts John has between the thread he started on the drivelines when he started lifting this truck and now that he's lowering it.

Here's my tech content so I'm not completely part of the problem:
I know I mentioned it long ago in his other thread and others have brought it up here and there - you had after market 4.88 gears installed in your diffs and they are likely just noisier than the OEM ones, that were well worn to boot, you took out.

Please send me your rear driveshaft you got from Christo (the double cardon one) so I can test it :hillbilly:
