Haven't had a chance to check in for awhile. Things look great. Glad those adjustable detents worked for you.

Zach

Thanks, the compliment means a lot.

Nope. 1 wire altenator w/ internal regulator.

Cool, that makes the wiring easier.

Man, I LOVE that tach setup. I think I will have to do the same thing :grinpimp:

Go for it, if you have any questions about it let me know.

Eey Moon.... and Coympanee: look at you Guys. I turn my back for 3 seconds and ya goot 6BT's ... and 4BT's.... BT here....BT ova darr.... awe like Rabbits popping out of FJ holes... evera-Wher.... Mooltiplayin' like somethin' Fierce & Furious!!

Glad we ayr not so alone now and we keep goot Coympanee.

To extern or not-to-Extern the regulator: it's oop to ya! See it's the regulatoors that die an early death and when day go.... they take the whole darn tang down. External makes it easier to replace the cheapo part (regulator) and leave the diehard part (the alternator-AC producin' stuff)....

Aye, but seriouusly: I'm proud of the little shoots that be shootin' up all ova da placees. Make ya proud to be a Catalyaneest!

Where be da teeshoos, moon? Dam-Pipe's goin' oot 2.
Aah, moon. I coont see through ma Eyes now....

Sounds good Rasta. It does seem like there are a lot of Cummins swapping happening now.
Your truck was definitely the spark that lit my swap. I hope you get to enjoy your square valvee covaas when you have some time off of the road.

Rasta my mentor and definite inspiration!

Got a couple of questions. First, I've got a line on a 96 year 6bt and will be looking at it soon and this will be going in my rootbeer brown 84 FJ. The first question is, do you have any frame measurements of where yours sits at? Not sure what trans I will be running yet. Next, will a 4-5" lift do the job instead of doing a SOA? I do plan on running the FJ60 axles and t-case. The guy told me that I could have the intercooler, rad, wiring harness, and computer. What else should I get with the 6bt to make it easier? Think I read somewhere that a guy on here used the stock FJ fan shroud and rad. Any help or pointers would be awesome... When I get going, I will start a build thread for sure. Plus I know that I will have a ton of questions. What will I need to keep from the 2F to mate to the 6bt?

What measurements would you like? I will be headed over to the shop after work and can grab any that you need.

A 4-5" lift work could be fine, it is all about the oil pan on these motors clearing the front axle housing and having enough room to shut the hood.

I do plan on running the FJ60 axles and t-case.

This is totally possible and has been done before. That being the case I would advise you to keep the motor stock in that case. If you turn up the power you will most likely have issues with parts failing under the additional torque.

The guy told me that I could have the intercooler, rad, wiring harness, and computer. What else should I get with the 6bt to make it easier?

I think that should be pretty much all you would need to hook it up. If you run a manual transmission the wiring is much less complex than if you were to run an auto. But either way it is not too bad. The radiator won't fit in the FJ60 without some major modifications to the front of the truck.

Think I read somewhere that a guy on here used the stock FJ fan shroud and rad.

I am running a slightly modified FJ60 radiator. I have yet to test its cooling capacity for the 6BT but these motors tend to run on the cooler side of things anyway.

Any help or pointers would be awesome... When I get going, I will start a build thread for sure. Plus I know that I will have a ton of questions. What will I need to keep from the 2F to mate to the 6bt?

The thing I would recommend the most would be to sit down and plan out the entire build. I spent a lot of time making sure everything would work and had a majority of the parts before I started the build. It helps to keep the project fresh.
You will come to appreciate the small victories in a project like this.
Having a build thread is great for encoragement and for posting up questions so totally do one.

I actually didn't save anything from my old 2F motor I'm not sure if anything from it would help for mating to the 6BT, unless you are planning on running the H42 trans, which I would avoid due to its lack of overdrive.

Any measurements from the frame rails to the motor mounts and from a common point on the front of the frame to the mounts or the front of the engine. Just wanting to know where to start at for mounting the 6bt. I know it will take some fine tuning on my part but just needed a little direction. Great build and I watched the youtube video of the engine start up, dang that thing sounds awesome.

Ok no problem I will grab some measurements for you tomorrow.
Glad you enjoyed the video, I know how much I like hearing that engine roar to life when I turn the key :grinpimp:

I tore into the 14 bolt a little bit today along with some steering issues.

The carrier on this axle is huge, here is a shot with some perspective.

I also brought my hy-steer arms to work today and drilled and reamed them to fit my new 1 ton TREs.
Here is a Toyota FJ80 TRE on the left compared to a GM 1 ton TRE on the right.

I cut and welded my new tie rod and got that installed as well today. I will need to pull the pitman arm an ream that out to fit a gm TRE, or I will need to fab up a new pitman arm.
It should be a ton of fun to pull. I soaked it in PB blaster so hopefully a little heat and it will be good to go.

I also need to source a new control plate or whatever for my injection pump. Mine has rounded inner grooves which allow the throttle indexing shaft to slip an cause my motor to run like garbage.

Its the little guy with all of the index marks on it. If anyone knows of a good source for one let me know. Or if you have an extra one laying around Pm me with what you want for it.

Not a problem. I will hopefully be going tomorrow (8/13/12) to look at the 6bt and if all looks and sounds good, will pay the guy and pull the motor out. Not sure how to post pictures on here yet, when I figure it out, I will put some of of my 60 and the motor.

Great to see someone else diving in the deep end! Start looking at the cummins forums and diesel bomber sites. You will find a lot of good info and a lot of questions get answered. Study Rasta's build thread. He makes it look simple. "how to do a 6bt in 11 easy steps" Throw the computer away. You don't need but, at most, 6 wires to put this beast in your 60.

Like Stevo said, do a little bit of planning and enjoy the little accomplishments along the way. I started planning this thing a year ago and hopefully will drive it out of the shop this week completely done, smiling the whole time smeling that sweet smell, rolling coal.

Bluehawk,

I took some measurements for you, unfortunately most will not be too useful unless you plan on running first gen cummins mounts.

One that will be usefull I think is the distance I have my mounts set from the front of the frame. In my case that distance is right around 30 1/2".

The other dimensions like the height locations of the mounts dont really apply to you because I transfered the engine "cradle" from my first gen over to the LC fame.
I tried to set the engine as low as possible in order to keep my COG low.
I also shifted my front axle forward and swapped in a D60 so any measurements off of that most likely wouldn't apply.

Well as fate would have it, didn't get to go look at the 6BT today. However, I did start work on the 60 Sunday. Took the whole front end apart and ready to pull out the old tired 2F. If anyone would be interested in this motor let me know. Still trying to find out how to post pictures. Steve, thanks for the measurement. Think this will get me started in the right direction. Thanks Klinedog, will take a look at those sites for sure.

No problem, glad I could help.

Over the weekend I worked on the 14 Bolt and now it is ready to get put under the cruiser.

Here is a list of the things I did to it:

Shaved it for clearance
Installed Grizzly lockers
Removed Drum brakes
Reinstalled Disc brakes
checked bearings for wear
installed 1410 ubolt yoke for the driveshaft
painted and reassembled

Heres some pictures of the shave job. I ended up removing around 1.5" from the bottom of the axle.
I just cut the chunk off with a sawzall and flap wheeled it smooth.

The cut:

Smoothed out:

All painted up and ready to get put under the cruiser:

I am glad I went with these tires, I originally had my heart set on some Trepadors, but was disappointed to find out that they only have bias Treps in the competition compound and only sell them to Maxxis team trucks.

Sooo, after some more research I came across these and here they are. 43/14.5/17 TSL SX.
I think I might be at the "Go big or go home" point of my build.:D

I really like the fact that there is plenty of side lugs to give traction and the amount of Void in the tread should help with the sticky muddy trails that are common around me.

And here is a nice comparison shot between my old 35" KM2 and my new 43" TSL SX.

Also a buddy of mine sent me some pictures I took with his camera.

I really like this one, and took it as an ode to Rasta for the inspiration his build gave me.

I received a nice package from Klinedog, with a note in it.

I will be sure to put these to use.

I was also able to get the steering linkages connected up.

0816122128.jpg

Getting the steering hooked up was very easy, I picked up a crossover steering kit from ruffstuff.
http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/XOGMSTE.html
I was able to ream the stock drop pitman arm on the FJ60 steering box to accept a GM 1 ton TRE's
Then it was just making a couple measurements, welding the bungs in, and painting the tubes.

Stevo,
Glad the box finally got there!

I am up and going now! Got my turbo parts in and put all back together yesterday. Probably already have 50 miles on it with the straight exhaust. My wife says my son and I look to complete morons riding around grinning like ****!

here is our start up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN3mfczV274

Will start working on exhaust system today
