It's very rare, to see a damaged screen. Some I suspect so clogged, they blew apart. Some I suspect, were poked.

Air is bleed during the bleed process. Which is explained in opening page of thread. Sometimes, during a complete draining of system, like R&P replacement. Are difficult to bleed. These we may get ~1 a minutes of start-up noise during finale faze of bleed.

6 & 12 wheel/tire play, is loose wheel bearings.

@2001LC great thread! Thank you for all the info! I have one question

I pulled my tie rods and tie rod ends off due to a ripped boot, inside was about 1/4 cup of oil on both sides.

I haven’t had any issues with my power steering just a little slop that I assumed was related to worn out tie rods & TREs. Not sure if it’s normal or not.

Anyways, I want to try flushing the system and adding some AT-205 to the fluid to see if it will stop the leak. I’m wondering if it’s possible to do this flush process with the tie rods disconnected or if I need the resistance from the weight of the hub/wheels to force the fluid out?

AT-205 it's NOT very good at stopping output seal of rack leaks. Slow them at best.

When I see bad mounting bushing and leaks at one or both output shaft (boots). I replace the rack & pinion. Non VRGS (03-07LX) are a great deal. We get new R&P with new OEM mounting bushing, new inner TRE and new boots & clamps.

What is the VRGS? Is that a kit with the new rack?

VRGS (Variable gear ration steering) is in the Lexus LX470 2003-07. The gear ratio of Rack & Pinion, is slightly different, than the standard Land Cruiser R&P. The VGRS R&P, cost twice as much as the NON VGRS. So most, just install non VRGS R&P in 03-07LX.

Did mine this week!
I simply unplugged the lower hose.
Filled it with 400ml to max cold.
Drove it for a week.
Drained & filled 400ml again today.
Fluid from Toyota dealer, $10.

I used to think the steering was heavy because of the 35s, but now it is much better!👌🏽

Got 2 bottles of the same fluid from craigslist for $10, and did another 3 exchanges, now the fluid is completely like new!👌🏽

How often should I do this to get the max life out of my steering system components?

I suction-drain and fill the reservoir once a year at least, it takes five minutes. I'm using Mobil1 ATF.

Nice!
I find removing the lower hose of the res. better than the suction method and gets more fluid out, 400ml vs 200ml.

Absolutely, I agree 100%, but it's so easy for me to put a fluid suction extractor into the res that I do it more often. Takes literally 2 mins to extract and refill.

One only need poor out the reservoir. See second picture in OP (post #1).
Personally, I do a full 1qt.

I went through this thread pretty thoroughly, so if this has been covered feel free to roast me.

I found a cheaper alternative to getting a replacement reservoir for these trucks if you aren't in need of the metal bracket. I can thank an old Motorweek review segment of the 2006 Pontiac GTO for this. This reservoir is used in many vehicles so after seeing it under the hood of that GTO I dug up a P/N.

GM 92202130

I received the part yesterday and can confirm it's identical to the reservoir in our trucks. They changed the labelling on the cap to just a couple info graphics, but that's irrelevant to me.

If that is the same and works with our system that is a great find. I just spent $148 on a new OEM reservoir.

Mind posting a picture of the back where it clips in?

I verified the diameters of the nipples fit the Toyota hoses perfectly.

This seems to be an "off the shelf" part that Toyota (and other manufacturers) used in a bunch of applications. The 92-01 Camry, the 95-04 Avalon, to name a few. But each Toyota res comes with a specific bracket, inflating the cost. What we need is just the reservoir itself and these are all identical.

I went with the GM version vs a knock off part as I figured going with a 'Genuine' part it would be the best of the batch. The knock offs have different cap designs and what appear to be inferior plastic quality.

what are you using a a cross reference from toyota to brand x?

Direct side-by-side comparison.

It was pure luck I saw the exact same reservoir bottle under the hood of a 2006 GTO. So I looked it up and then compared to images on Partsouq.

If you reverse image search the reservoir you can then see other applications, which is how I know it’s in other Toyotas and GM vehicles.

If you look at additional markings on the reservoir itself, there is a PA6 stamp on the firewall side of the reservoir and a PA6-GF30 stamp on the bottom.

These markings exist exist on the GM reservoir and the other Toyota model reservoirs.

Images are from genuine Toyota part 443606210
