Mine starts about 3 zings before yours and it likes to rattle.

And why is it that there is rattle at start up with the bigger filter?

this crosees over to the other thread about draining filters, the larger empty space in the filter the longer time without oil pressure on startup,

if you could keep the oil filter full then there would be no diffrence, (and quite possibly no rattle) liquids are virtually uncompressable, oil would come out the the filter at the same time no matter how large the filter was.

Just buy some Motorcraft FL-400S filters at Wal-Mart for three twenty seven and forget about it. Nice silicon ADBV, good filtration, moderate size to minimize rattling (for the rattlers) easily available and cheap.

"Land Cruiser" and "Walmart" are diametrically opposed statements. You just can't get there from here......:flipoff2:

I run the same filter on just about all my rides
The ford van,the 40, the 2 80s and the 70 so I tend to buy them by the case. sometimes the FL1AMotorcraft, 1515 Napa Golds, or the OF950 OE+
Just need to see if I can get one of the big boys to fit the Scion T/C ;)

The threads are the same size....;)

Great link on the Toyota Filters RavenTai. I added that to post #9 of the Oil FAQ.

Yeah but will I need to cut a hole in the firewall to make it fit ? Hell it might even be nice to know where it is  Its sure is hiding on this little car:flamingo:

True-The FL1A Motorcraft filter is on my FJ40 right now. They are dirt cheap, and of adequate quality for a trail rig that sees at most 3K miles per year. When I change the oil, it will get a -xxx10 Toyota filter, but the FL1a's are pretty good for the $$.

Except it is the only place I can find Rotella Syn

Ben,

Call a local Shell distributor. There's one in Spokane and just so you don't waste your time, this was the gist of our conversation.

"Hey, I can get Rotella Syn 5-40 at Walmart for $12.70 or so a gallon, what's your case price?"

"Uh, um, lessee here carry the 3 and uh.....if you pick it up here that would be $14.70. How's that?"

"Um, thanks for playing - guess I'll buy it one gallon at a time for less money.."

Frankly, I was bummed that Walmart sells it for less than his cost. In my world, it's much more rewarding to go in somewhere with dusty dingy counters, a dog sleeping on the floor, and a fat guy reading the newspaper who's probably got something interesting to say than to go to Walmart. But it's not to be...

Jim,

If you'd tune up your friggin' truck you'd be treated to the startup rattle. I'm virtually certain it's the timing chain before the oil pressure powered tensioner gets up to pressure. Not my original thought, but now that I've been in there I agree this is the noise.

Yup, that's how I feel about my barbershop - tough to find these days.

There isn't. Or at least there isn't more with the big filter on my rig. It rattles with everything.

I'm on 80 Series #7 and no rattles, so I ain't changing a thing except oil every 3000 miles. :D
