Starting some rust repairs on the troopy (1 Viewer)

Its been a week, ive enjoyed the hell out of driving her to work everyday. There are some rust spots that i want to take care of.

Im a little worried about a spot right under the windshield gasket, ive seen the horror stories of having to remediate. I am ordering a new gasket and unpeeling that onion in the next few weeks.

My skills are less than stellar with sheet metal fabrication, so in case its that bad... does anyone have pointers to either club members or trusted shops that are trust worthy in case I need them.

Id also like to hear some of what you guys use with older rigs. Historically, ive just wirewheeled, sanded primed and painted. Are there any tips you old timers have with their old timer rigs that i would benefit from?

It really depends on the level of rust you are talking about. If the rust is not all the way through the metal and not crazy deep you can wire wheel, treat with something like Ospho Ospho

I remove every trace of rust prior to using Ospho. After a day I wire wheel the effected area again, generally prime with self etching primer then top coat.

Cancer, in my mind rust all the way through or so deep it might as well be, is better removed and replaced with new sheet metal. This is where it gets complicated for those without welding tools or skills. No matter what you run up against, think long term and KILL the rust. Rust never sleeps..............

So you wheel, Ospho, wait 24 hrs, wheel, prime then paint? Is your goal to remove any Ospho-converted rust on day 2 or am I reading this wrong?

From your link, it looks like Ospho is a treatment, not a paint-like coating like POR-15. Seems like it would be better at getting into any microscopic remnants of rust than POR-15.

Yea, Ospho is good stuff. It's really thin and goes a long way.

I think POR encapsulates. In the directions for POR there is a "metal prep" to "neutralize" the rust.

My method is to scrape, sand and wire wheel until there is no visible rust (shiny bumpy metal), POR 15, POR Tie Coat, prime and paint. I've never been a fan of rust converters or chemical solutions. I remove the rust mechanically ( that way I can SEE that it's gone) and seal the metal to ensure it doesn't come back. My way is definitely more labor intensive than others but it works well.

Ok, here is the plan

1.Remove all visible rust, whether with a wire wheel, sand blasting, cutting wheel or dynamite.
2.spray with Ospho. This is not to convert rust, this was removed in step #1. This is to get into every nook and cranny possible, I use a spray bottle. If you have cut out any metal, stick it up behind the hole and coat what you can.
3.Light wire wheel again, this is to remove any substance left behind from the Ospho
4.Clean, prime and paint.

I use the Ospho as a preventative measure as much as anything else. What is missed with the second wire wheeling remains in cracks and crevices.

I started using Ospho when I lived in the Keys, anyone with any sense had a bottle around. I sprayed the stuff on my truck chassis a couple times a year. In the end, rust never sleeps and our rigs are known to rust, it is sometimes the best you can do just to keep up.

The color code for your white will be on the body tag, and on the 7x trucks, I believe it's below the hood in the engine bay, like on the 60s.

My white is Toyota 033.

EDIT: "below the hood in the engine bay". What great advice. The body tag is just below where the hood meets the cowl on the firewall.

My experience: One of the largest automotive parts stores in town couldn't find any paint in their computer to match my paint code.
The solution: The store owner kept digging and after entering several Toyota automobiles from the early '90's (domestic sedans) discovered that there were 5-6 different shades of blue used by Toyota in the early 90's. (Fun Times). To complicate matters, the paint I needed was referred to as "gray" by Toyota. Thankfully I had a persistent store owner that was able to solve the puzzle.

I have had tried them myself and they do work but not as well as POR, Corroless and even Rustoleum rusty metal primer in my opinion work better if you do all of the correct surface prep including getting off ALL of the grease and oil prior to prepping.

Basically to summarize, you wash with detergent, scrape in three directions, wire brush by hand in three directions and then wash again. Once dry you use a rusty metal primer and then topcoat as soon as the primer is dry.

Using a wire wheel on a drill or worse yet a grinder, can polish up the surface and make the primer not stick as well (it sticks better to the nooks and cranny's of the rough metal than it does to the polished metal - wire wheels can also spread around a lot of grease and oil). You should treat with an acid wash after you do this to make the paint stick better. For that reason, I do not and use hand prep methods most of the time or I use a Snap-On Crud Thug or MBX blaster vs a grinder with wire wheel. It turns much slower, is easier to control and does not polish up the high spots. Expensive but awesome tool. MBX makes a corded one for about $450

I clean the inside of a frame with a flue brush. Cut down to size one bristle at a time. Fiberglass handle on side and chain on the other. I have a brand new one that I am not going to use. $40 for the brush and rod.

You can also weld short two inch sections of small chain to the end of a ⅜ metal round stock about 3 feet long. Weld on some hard surface tack welds to the ends of the chain. Chuck into a monster drill and insert into frame. Spin at low speeds. Worked great.

Cool! I have one of those machines with the rubber eraser wheel. I acquired it from a buddy who was in charge of re-branding all the Bellsouth vehicles to AT&T when we changed names. It works great. I didn't know you could get other wheels for it. Mine is air powered. Learn something new every day!

I hear you about the rust belt Dave, I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. They stored salt like this and applied it to our vehicles with a clever road distribution method. I think it was all financed by the big 3 in Detroit at the time

Cool! I have one of those machines with the rubber eraser wheel. I acquired it from a buddy who was in charge of re-branding all the Bellsouth vehicles to AT&T when we changed names. It works great. I didn't know you could get other wheels for it. Mine is air powered. Learn something new every day!

You will love it, you can get the coarse and fine wheels from Wurth, Snap-on, Dentfix, Auto Body Tool Mart and directly from MBX in Virginia. IIRC Harbor Freight might even have them.

I have used it from everything to cars, welding, architectural iron work and even for cleaning stone and brick. Amazing for weld prep and getting ornamental iron ready to paint. You will have to try it to understand how much better than a grinder it is.
