I'd like to swap in a full float rear axle. A friend mentioned that FZJ80 series axles (93 and up) may be wider by 8 inches that a 60 series full floating rear axle.

Anyone know if this is true? If so, where's the best place to acquire one to put under my 62.

It is not 8 inches wider. Maybe like 2" on each side, 4" total

I think 80 is 63 inches and a 60 is 58 inches. So it's 5 inches wider.

ok. So an 8- series axle is marginally wider. So whichever I can find at the right price.

THE FJ80 ff has disc brakes. with factory 16 wheels, the track width is more like 2" or 2 1/2" wider than a 60. it won't accept 60 series wheels BTW...HTH

If you do the 80 axle in the rear, you can do the (mini truck?) hubs with Tundra brakes and have better brakes and matching width.

I have one for sale in the classifieds. pm me if youre interested

I'll bump this.

If you aren't specifically after a different width axle, a 60 series FF is a super simple swap. We've got one under Dad's 61, and under my 60. Nice that the backing plate and most parts are entirely common to my late 40 series FF as well.

But those can be a #$%$@ to find. Would be easier to find an 80 series and swap over. One of the things that will be LOOOOONNNG down the road for me is swapping both axles for FZJ80 axles, hopefully with e-lockers in them already.

I stand corrected, any time I have looked there have been zero available. For the price though I wonder if you could get an FZJ80 rear axle with disc and locker and have the extra money for the modification needed to get the spring perches on.

I am in the process of putting an fzj80 full float rear in my 60 and adding IFS hubs up front with Tacoma rotors and IFS calipers. This will give me discs fr/rr, a parking brake, and a little wider track (which is a plus for me - maybe not for everyone).

I got the full float for free (minus shafts and a 3rd member) and bought some Ruffstuff perches. The worst part, by far, is cleaning off the link brackets from the 80 series axle. I have yet to get the 80 axle underneath, but I took plenty of "before" pictures.

Thanks for all the info. The ability to run disk in the rear is a nice addition.

Knowing that the 80 axle wont accept 15 inch rims isn't a problem for me. I run 16's.

I personally try to avoid using aftermarket or custom built parts as often as I can. Its been my experience they are more prone to failure then oe stuff. Friend of mine broke an 80 axle shaft on a fj55 at hot springs last year. upon inspection the aftermarket shaft had a manufacturing flaw. Very unlikely it would have broken an oe shaft. Plus its nice being able to get parts from the dealer instead of relying on some aftermarket companying to stay in business and readily supply it. Also with oe stuff used will always be an option when something brakes while with a custom one off shaft again you are at the mercy of the vendor.

Yeah. Looking at the custom shafts didn't get exciting. Then the ebrake issue too.

I think the 80 series axle is looking to be the best bet. It's newer so there should be more support for it on the market longer.

support is a non issue. the thirds are the same between the 60 and 80. the full float 60 axle hubs and brakes parts are going to be around for a long time since the hubs are the same as the fronts and same as 70 series trucks as well

I was commenting on support for custom axles, which I assume is what would be needed if I went with my current rear housing and welded on Ruffstuff end plates which allow front hubs to bolt on.

There seem to be quite a few 93-97 80 series (also Lexus 450) being parted out these days. I just bought both axles from a LX450 for a very good price doing the work to pull them myself.

I will be well under the price of a 60 FF when I'm done with the swap.
