Just a quick question....does anybody know about the quality of SOR's lift kits? They're actually priced well and with the June special, priced even better....so if anybody has them or knows someone who does, I'd love to hear about it! Thanks everybody...

Class...anyone?...class....anyone?......

(Ferris Bueller ref...thanks)

I installed one on my 76 FJ40. It is pretty stiff until the springs get broke in.

If it was your DD I would go with a different kit.

Had the SOR lift on my old '76 and it was STIFF. Maybe it never got broken in . On my '74 I have a Rancho lift and it is way softer than the SOR lift which from what I understand people consider the Rancho lift to be very stiff. So either it is very broken in or the SOR lift is even worse.

I have the 2" SOR lift springs and it rides OK. I got a deal on it from Poser. I do think the shocks(ProComp 3000) leave a little to be desired. That may account for the stiff ride. The ride is much better than my saggy stockers, but that may be due to new bushings. Dunno.

Cool, I appreciate the feedback.....Maybe I'll just save up the extra cash and get the OME kit.

How about the SOR springs with different shocks? Just wondering.

I put 6 tube sands in the bed of the 40 and tried to twist it up as much as possible. I also spray the springpacks with PB BPlaster about once a month.
I don't know what shocks to go to and have not experimented with any.

I think he can pick them up. Poser "shipped" mine to me on a Caterpillar truck and i picked them up locally:) Besides, at $300 for the whole enchilada......
Bushings, U bolts, springs and shocks....well, you know.

SOR KIT - Was looking at it also...

I to was interested in the SOR kit, and was seeking advice. The sale price is tempting, but the shipping quote did sting. I did a lot of searching on the lift kits and have yet to find one that gets all the praise that OME does.

My truck is a DDriver that sees some weekend fire roads and beaches - FJ40.

Is the OME Kit the only one that gets a good rating for ride quality?

I believe that OME tries to duplicate the factory ride.

There is only so much you can do with a short wheel based vehicle.

I've been running an SOR lift kit for about 6 years. It was stiff as hell for about the first 2. It is still not soft by any stretch, but if I have 75-100 lbs in the back, it provides a very smooth ride (at least as well as can be expected from an FJ-40):D

I've got the 4" on my 73 and it is stiff as a mofo. I've only had the truck for a little over a year so I'm not really sure when the PO installed. Was thinking about switching out the shocks for OME to see if it softens it up a little. Anyone done this or a put on a different set of shocks?

I also get a some weird spring creaking on uneven ground, this seems to go away about two weeks after I grease everything and put Lanocoat(sp) on the springs.

I've had the SOR 4" lift kit on since April. The rig is my DD and weekend offroader. While the ride was stiff in the beginning I really hesitate to hold the SOR springs guilty for that as I was not able to get the gas shocks that went with the kit through international shipping. So I have the SOR springs with c-r-a-p-tastic truck shocks for $20+ each. All that being said after a couple of wheeling trips they feel much better. I my plan is to swap in Bilstein adjustables whenever I can figure out how to get them here. All in all it was a nice bolt on kit.

Good to know. Mine is so stiff I was even considering taking out a leaf to see if that would help. Probably just going to call SOR and see if they have an easier solution first.

I was really happy with my Downey Kit (4" Lift for a '74 FJ-40)

Downey Off-Road

Scroll down - Their Web site advertises the price of $409 that's what I got mine for.

Not stiff - rides great on the road, no issues off.

SOR told me yesterday when the kits are new the wheels should be rocked back and forth over a curb front and rear a bunch of times to help break in. Mine is at least two years old so it doesn't apply to me. THey said they haven't had many complaints about the kit. They said also to check that the shackles aren't over torqued too tight and not moving. Forgot to ask them, anyone know the torque rate?
