Hey guys that have actually cooked in their engine bays..

I just installed a fish basket in my engine bay...... but the top is really hard for me to get to work properly... is it absolutely necessary to have a lid on the basket? I mean, wouldn't i have to jump my truck to get the food to fly out...... right?

The roast was darn tasty.. though it was a little undercooked. With how cold it was up there, I think I hit the limit of under-hood temp, and she topped out at about 118 degrees F. Here's the temp data..

17:00, 35 deg. direct from fridge, cold engine
18:00, 64 deg.
19:00, 96 deg
20:00, 114 deg
20:45, 118 deg... let's eat.

But sliced up then tossed on the grill for a minute per side made it just perfect. yeah, I think we'll do wings next night run, I'll boil them first so no one gets hurt ;) .

pic of the temp gage, and pic of the roast in the rack...

edit: damn that red dirt... it's everywhere!!!

Last time I saw something similar was in Alaska, great idea!

he Maverick ET-73 Redi-Chek® Wireless Remote Smoker Thermometer is a programmable radio-frequency food thermometer and timer specially designed for use in smokers. A remote sensor/transmitter monitors the temperatures of both the meat and the smoking chamber and transmits them up to 100 feet to the displaying receiver so that you can view them from virtually anywhere in your home. Smoking meat, poultry, and fish properly can take a long time. Instead of going out to the smoker to check the temperature over and over, just use the Redi-Chek ET-73. If the temperature of the smoking chamber drops too low or rises too high, the receiver sounds an alert and its alarm icon and probe temperatures flash. The alert also sounds and the icon and temperatures flash when the temperature of the meat being smoked exceeds your preset food temperature. Because both smoker and meat temperatures are monitored, chances are your food will be smoked to perfection every time. The ET-73 can also be used with an oven or grill while baking or barbecuing, which means fewer trips to the kitchen or grill.

And now you're really in business.

my problem is that I really, really love spaghetti. I'm sure the sauce is not going to be a problem but what about the noodles?
I guess in warm weather climates I could drain the coolant, maybe flush it once or twice and fill with water, then add noodles? How the hell do I get the noodles back out though? Better stick with spaghetti, I like Penne but that seems harder to fish out. maybe I should put a small magnet in each noodle then as they pass under the radiator cap I could just hold a magnet in the filler cap and they will jump right out into my hand. It'd be just like bert & ernie fishing. s***, I hope my radiator is aluminum or my noodles will stick. what if I put a drop of olive oil in the water, that probably won't keep the noodle magnets from sticking. would they cook sufficently in the overflow bottle? I'll just put a screen in the bottle there and dinner is served.

Update: other than some grease comming of the cooker and onto the exhaust(that did seem to make it smell good though). It worked well. I found a steak at the store that was cut up into little bite size peices. Threw it on the cooker befor I left for the trail today. We stoped for lunch around 12:30 and the meet was cooked perfect. Think i'm gonna try and find something that could catch the grease as it cooks so it doesnt get every where.....

How about a aluminium foil tray! :)

man I love it when these old threads get revived... :D

Correct, as long as you don't do any super hard stops or take the 80 off any any sweet jumps your stuff should be fine in the basket without the lid. I've left it off when doing larger items like garlic bread or a pot roast in a pan and never had an issue, but I like to keep some bailing wire around just to put a safety strap around it for good measure. Sure would feel dumb if something got launched forward into the fan.. better if you can lower it somehow and use the lid, I know mine's tough with the OBA since it's right under the air intake tube but it's still doable, especially if I jump up and stand on the PS tire..

Excellent mod and thread. Going to look for a grilling basket for this weekend's trip.

Iiiiiiit's back... How on earth did I stumble on this while searching for info on regearing my diffs??

Anyway, I know what my next project is going to be, post-O2-sensor-replacement...

Yeah! I love my simple Snakman grill. Started home from Salt Lake this weekend with a bag of General Tso's chicken and some gross pizza bites one of my kids wanted. Arrive in Moab, gas up, remove food...enjoy! I'm going to have to find out if there is a good place to put them after my supercharger install. I also cooked a pot roast in it last year on the way to Silverton, CO:hillbilly:

That's exactly my plan for this weekend!

It just occured to me that the 3FE manifold is in a fantastic spot for a smallish grill.

I have been using my second battery tray in my 97 LX as a food warmer. It is kept at a decent temperature by the coolant overflow bottle, but not hot enough to cook on. However it is perfect for warming meals. Pre-sliced Italian meatballs in marinara come out nice and warm by lunchtime and make a great sandwich. Throw a few slices of fresh mozzarella on top. Yea baby.
