Unless my math is horrible, it doesn't help. I can only see about 75:1 unless you have a non Toyota Transmission or portals

What is expressed as 1.08:1 in High and 3.05:1 in Low is not the final reduction ratio, but it is the ratio of the transfer case gears that were replaced with Marks gears.

It is Option 4 on the link listed below:

How is the difference? I been considering these Marks for years.

Yes your option is as stated.

Looks good, did you paint it? It seems like its grey in those pictures.

I guess Ill see you at the liver quiver again, I may need someone well equipped to tow my mall cruiser around out there! My brown 60 has gone to cruiser heaven.

cody c Oh No ! The 60 is gone, that is horrible:crybaby:

Yes, liver quiver it is . Looking forward to chumming out .

Hi gotoy

I have had the Marks Gears in my BJ 74 for 4 years now.

Total mileage since Marks gears were installed is 116,000 kms.

(My driving habit) My front hubs are always in the LOCK position
I have a couple of witnesses that can tell you that the transfer case has been in 4wd for 75,000 and 60,000kms for Low Range.
As soon as I am off the pavement 4wd is engaged .For trail use it is ALWAYS IN LOW RANGE or any dirt driving under 25kms per hour.

(NOISE) or very light whine

My BJ 74 is my EXPO/ Off road vehicle. The only time it goes on the pavement is to head to the trail . So at speeds from 65km/h up there is a constant whine, it is not harsh but it is there. I gladly put up with it for its ability to drive slow when needed.

The tranfer case internals are quite abit stronger than the OEM gears.
My 74 is in good shape meaning on a good dirt road @ 90km I can engage and disengage 4WD directly and smoothly providing that the rear wheels are not spinning, sometimes I can engage and disengage @ speed several hundred times a day if I am travelling hundreds of KMs on Gravel/ Hard packed dirt.

In a note; the ability to drive slower outweighs the mild whine tenfold. I usually take about 2-3 months off in the summer to Expo hundreds of Kms away from ciivilization while having to pick up supplies and fuel every 2 weeks( I have a Waeco CF 110 ) and carry up to 60 litres of diesel in gerry cans. Driving slow in low range driving around 10-12 hours aday @ 1200-1600rpms the 13B-T can go along way.

I would like to go a little lowe A couple of the sprung over guys like Lowenbrau and Behemoth 60 have Marlin Cases with 4.7 to 1 low. I hope this helps (it took me along time to type) LOL PS I always take the torque off the case every time I stop on the trail by taking it out of 4wd or putting the case in N

Thanks for the comments on the Marks Gears!

Anytime AlbertoSD . The Marks gears were used and in the transfer case when I got them. They are holding up quite well.

The 60's old worn out body is gone, but the drivetrain lives... Its being swapped into a slick little 4 door hilux  , but wont be ready for the shiver, though maybe for the beginning of summer.

Good read for someone like me trying to decide b/w 33s and 35s. With the 13BT it sounds like a regearing isn't absolutely necessary? A few relatively minor items to address to get everything to fit and not rub or bind too bad makes the cost of entry for 35s pretty reasonable. Not to mention the new BFG AT ko2 in 315/75/16 is almost exactly the same cost as the 255/85/16 KM2 I was considering.

For me, this will be my wheeler, but wheeling requires a good amount of highway driving to get to.

Any advice or thoughts?!

Thanks!

You're just talking about the low range, right? Do you do a lot of driving in 4w-lo at 50kph?

This will be my solo adventure and wheeling vehicle. I am on the east coast where things are generally pretty rocky and muddy. There's a local off road park where I go to play about once a month that's an hour away, all of my other off-road adventures generally require a few hours of highway travel to get there. I don't want to give up too much on the highway, but I am hoping that the 74 can be a bit more capable and get me into (and out of!) a few trickier situations than our 100-series.

The 74 is also a 5 speed so will need to take that into consideration. I was searching and reading another thread where @crushers stated he was very happy running up to 35s with the 4.11 stock gearing.

Yes low range only, mine is a 5spd with 4.11's and 2wd, hwy is great, 2200rpm at 100km/hr is perfect. Yes I do a reasonably amount of driving from crawling speed upto 50km/h and back down again, probably why my brakes only last 5000km

Fireball - the Mark's gears are great in the 74. The extra low range makes a huge difference for wheeling.
I went with the 1:08:1 high range gears thinking I'd need the extra gearing for 35s. I don't. A 2.5" exhaust and turning up the boost turns the 35s just fine with 4.11s and no lowered high range.
I may eventually swap out my 1.08:1 high gears for a 1:1 set. I do a lot of long highway trips and the little extra speed would be most welcome.

When you come to get your truck you can take mine for a drive and see what you think.

looks awesome but I think you will find that lifting it 2" and dropping tire size is the better option. You will be able to articulate much more, gas mileage and performance will increase. Love the way it looks though.

Norm, would love to take you up on that offer. That's exactly the size I'd consider running as well.

How did you choose b/w the 2.81 vs. 3.05 low range? Incidentally, what is the stock low range?

Are your Mark's 1.08:1 High range gears noisy?

Here is another good thread that I was reading before bumping this one, a few folks discuss the whine of the gears:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/35-tires-on-bj-74.393630/

Seems like this would be another compelling reason to maintain the 1:1 high range to avoid any possible noise/whine issues.
