Just spent 30 minutes scouring the internet for this 'mythical' beast?

Certain posts on MUD by folks claiming to have a socket set including the 'E9' and other posts suggesting alternate methods to remove nuts/studs...but not a single link or source given for the socket. Virtually all the socket sets I could find skip over the E9.

So...does the darn thing exist or not? And if not...why did @IdahoDoug include it in his list of things needed/desired for a HG replacement.

E stands for External Torx, same as calling it a female. A 9mm is just a 9mm.

You can just double nut the studs to get them out.

Yes, so where does one find an E9?

A 9mm is just a 9mm.
Yeah, I have several 9mm's and various 45's etc....but I rather not blast the nut off. ;)

I'm sure I can get the nuts to come off using one method or another but what I want to know about is the supposed E9 socket. Is there such a thing or not.

^^^^^^ Expand for replies.

It's just for the EGR studs - most of the time the entire stud comes off anyway, regardless, visegrip etc will do just fine, it's not some critical part of the engine etc... Double nut works fine too. No point looking for a unicorn :)

cheers,
george.

^ some folk claim a 12pt 1/4 socket/box spanner end will work for an E9. So, give it a go or use a visegrip or double nut :)

cheers,
george.

buy the cheap set at harbor junk think it was less then 10 bucks work great.

Couldn't help myself - had to check. Found a set that includes the E9 on Amazon. CTA Tools 10100. But did notice that most sets do exclude the E9.

If you zoom into the picture of the CTA tool set on Amazon you will see an E8 and next to it an E10... No E9. I've seen lots of sets (e.g. harbor freight) that just quote E7/E8/E9/E10/E11... but when you check there is no E9. The folk writing the ad copy just assume that E9 must be there. E9 probably exists in some expensive set out there, but until visually confirmed...

Yes there is such a thing. Quick search shows many for sale from Proto, Snap-on, Harbor Freight, etc.

Then you'd be able to provide me a link with item included? I went to the Snap-On site and can not find the socket listed there. Same for Proto (so far).

I have an OTC set socket sizes E4 thru E24 (but lacking E9 of course) and would simply like to add it.

The CTA tool set does at least 'list' it (how accurate that is...I don't know) but I don't need a 'set'.

So...if anyone with better 'Search-Fu' skills than mine can point me to an individual E9 socket for sale (preferably high quality) it would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: CTA tool set cited above does NOT have an E9 socket.

That is what I am finding as well. So far...I've not turned up an actual E9...only claims for it.

I read that somewhere as well and it does sound plausible.

OK, grabbed my handy dandy harbor freight set and the E6 fits the EGR studs, the E8 fits the exhaust manifold studs. Only two here today, '93 & '97, both the same. The EGR studs are m8, the E9 would be bigger than the stud, couldn't get a nut on?

Hah, you beat me to it.

Just got back from my shop. Had to change the oil in the Cruiser and figured I'd just check the darn thing myself. An E9 (if it existed) would be too large anyway.

Thanks for the info and your time.

Yep. Wow. The CTA site for the set does not list the E9. Thanks for pointing that out before I tried to corner the E9 market by buying the 2 sets available on Amazon.

A '96 LX was just here, same deal, so....

Just checked my Craftsman set, yup no E9.

But I've twisted the Torx head off a few studs, so my preference now is my snazzy stud sockets, they work really well and never damage threads:

I was digging to see if I could find the ISO standard to see if it's just super uncommon or plain doesn't exist. The closest I could find is this for this one: ISO 10664 "Hexalobular internal driving feature for bolts and screws" linked here: https://willrich.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/ISO-10664_.pdf ISO 14582 and the don't list that size. This is an older version of the standard, as I think they have updated 2x since 1999. Also found the original patent but it doesn't go into the sizing: US3584667A - Coupling arrangement and tools for same - Google Patents
