Single molded headliner

I’ve been thinking about a possible headliner upgrade for the 60/62 Series. Since I’ll be installing heat shielding and sound deadening, I’ve been reminded how much of a hassle the factory bow-style headliner can be.

That got me wondering—what if there were a molded one-piece headliner available, similar to what Toyota introduced in the 80 Series and later models?

I want to take a quick pulse from the community:

Would you be interested in a molded one-piece headliner as an upgrade to the stock bow-style setup?

Just a simple yes or no at this stage.

A few important notes:

• No concept drawings yet—use your imagination for now
• Not sure on the exact production process (though 3D scanning is likely the most practical)
• I’ve explored using a donor roof to create a mold, but quotes so far have been unrealistic
• The goal is an OEM+ finish—think 2025 LC79 style, not exposed roof ribs like a Troopy

Appreciate any early feedback—just gauging community interest before taking the next step.

Yes would be nice to not pop windows every time you need to get into headliner.

I was wondering if we could get plastic trim that goes under the window rubber on the windshield and cargo windows as well as the pinch weld rubber around the doors and tailgate. Then the headliner could just be the ceiling. A sort of "crown moulding" design for the transition from the bottoms of the pillars to where the ceiling starts and then fabric only on the ceiling part. It's very inconvenient to remove the windows to repair or replace the headliner

I’m just musing here.....I’ve long yearned to change up the headliner design of a 60 series. I really dislike the way the headliner is permanently held in place by the windshield and rear cargo window gaskets. It makes accessing the inner roof surface a major task and limits the ability to use the sheet metal edges and roof ribs to hang accessories, etc. It is prone to rip damage and discoloring with dirt, and just too damn soft looking.

I was just looking through the photo gallery on the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum site and saw these 70/75 series photos and got me thinking again on...

I’ve read this thread before. My vision is instead of texposed roof rib to have a ceiling styled like the 80 Series. I’m taking upholstery classes, and my instructor believes we can make it work. He said he’s got a lot of experience making seagull bold headliners for classic cars at bow clips. The trim pieces for the pillars and a solution for routing the wiring will need careful planning. Feedback, thoughts, or philosophical insights welcome.

It seems a 3D scan of the bare A, B, and C pillars, from the inside, would be a good start to designing the plastic moldings for these since there's not much fabric or padding there. Something would need to be figured out for the spaces between pillar molding tops across the window tops. Maybe just a generic "bridge" molding that spans the space and can be held in place by the grab handle bolts and the rear view mirror over the front windshield. And for the cargo area, maybe just some simple pinch weld clips that can be hidden under the lift back pinch weld rubber. The screws on the D pillar hold it in place before it transitions to that area. A molding to go across that area could also be made and held in place with the pinch weld rubber.

Working with a trim shop with a experience converting bow clip headliners in classic cars to single mold.

I for one would be very interested. When I took mine out I quickly realized how much of a pain it would be to put back in.

This would be really cool, especially if it's cost-competitive with having a shop redo the headliner AND you don't care if isn't original (don't really care personally, others may be a bit more OE / period correct / whatever whatever about it). I've had quotes between $1200-$1500 for the labor just to install the headliner, plus the headliner at about $350 or so, PLUS removing / reinstalling the glass ($300ish plus gaskets). So yeah, it's an undertaking.

If its relatively light, like a hood insulator, and in two parts (easy to hide a seam), shipping shouldnt be so bad. If you have ever had something shipped from $OR, you probably have already paid astronomical shipping before.
